Police: Clinton neighbor's account of weekend shooting is 'unusual-sounding'

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. (AP) — Questions have multiplied since police began their investigation into the weekend shooting of a disbarred lawyer and his wife, who lived on the same cul-de-sac as former President Clinton.

Police said Tuesday that 58-year-old Carlos Perez-Olivo's story of a mysterious roadside ambush that killed his wife and left him wounded is "unusual-sounding," and have not ruled out the possibility he had something to do with the shootings.

No arrests have been made and police said the lawyer was permitted to leave Northern Westchester Hospital late Monday. He apparently returned to his home on a Chappaqua cul-de-sac.

Visitors arrived steadily at the home. A man who answered the door, Drew Stern, identified himself as a friend of the family and said a statement would be issued to the media but did not say when and he asked reporters to leave the property.

The lawyer's wife, teacher's assistant Peggy Perez-Olivo, 55, died Monday afternoon, the victim of a gunshot to the head. Her husband told police the shot was fired by a man who cut off their car on a dark road Saturday night, then climbed in and shot both of them as they returned from an evening in Manhattan.

Story continues

The road would not normally be part of the route home, but Perez-Olivo said they had detoured to find a gas station. He said he was able to drive to the hospital despite his abdominal wound.

He told police he did not recognize the gunman, but he described him in detail. The police issued a sketch and asked the public for help.

Asked whether investigators considered treating Perez-Olivo as a suspect, New Castle Detective Sgt. Marc Simmons said, "We're treating him like a shooting victim."

But he added, "Nobody's being ruled in or out" and said Perez-Olivo's account makes for "an unusual-sounding incident."

Police declined to answer questions about what type of gun was used, whether the gun or any shell casings had been found, or whether surveillance video from a gas station near the shooting scene had been useful.

They also would not comment on any motive for the shooting, although Simmons said detectives would look into some of Carlos Perez-Olivo's former clients.

Perez-Olivo was disbarred three months ago for refusing to return unearned funds to clients, and jurors have criticized him as incompetent in his defense of a murder suspect.

The killing of a neighbor had no apparent effect on security at the Clinton home three doors away.

"The Clintons are saddened to hear of the death of their neighbor Mrs. Perez-Olivo," said Philippe Reines, press secretary to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Of course unusual. "there we were walking, and then that pinging sound of broken chain leash and then this hillary's coming down... We tried to run away, but were not fast enough..."

The bodies are still stackin' up like cordwood around these two, aren't they?

Hard to believe the guy would give himself a self-inflicted gut-shot wound; those are the worst, and the most painful and are a terrible way to die, not to mention the endless complications you'll have during recovery.

(Yes, I meant "gut-shot" not "gun-shot.")

If I lived in close proximity to the Clintons I would put my house on the market.

I don't seek to imply that the Clintons were involved at all, but at some point the law of averages or probabilities does become stressed to the point of incredulity. Outside of Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot or some other tyrant outside of a formal military, I don't know of a single person who has had more people drop dead from within his circle of aquaintences.

I'd move away from the Clintons if they were to move into my neighborhood or join some organization where we could soon come into contact.

Must be some sort of special zoning for disbarred lawyers up there.

Maybe Bill stained another blue dress and Hillary had to have it cleaned. :)

Must not have been THAT big of a deal since he's already left the hospital.

The guy's a dirtbag, just like his neighbors :)

Was it the same type of gun used on Vince Foster?

As Maxwell Smart would say. "Ah the old Baretta (Robert Blake) trick."

Upon his return to the car a few minutes later, Blake found Bonny slumped over in the passenger seat, unconscious and bleeding profusely from a wound to her head. Unable to revive her, the actor ran to the home of filmmaker Sean Stanek, located directly behind Vitello's and just across the street from the car.

I don't want to sound like a DUer or DailyKOS type, but can someone honestly assess the number of people that George W Bush has associated in his life that has ended up dead as a result of homocide or suicide?

Then please do the same analysis for our dear former President.

I wonder what Senora Oliva knew and when she knew it.

Now, now...it's a fact: everyone who ever met Bill will die sooner or later.... think about it.

Ten bucks says the guy was involved. Not that he necessarily shot himself and his wife, but that he paid someone to kill her -- and to wound him in the process to help cover his tracks.

This very similar to a case up in Boston a few years ago, and to another case in New Jersey back in the 1980s. The guy in the New Jersey case -- who paid a hit man to kill his wife and beat him over the head with a tire iron on the side of the Garden State Parkway (a well-orchestrated plan in which the couple "broke down" on their way home from Atlantic City) -- was the only person on death row whose death sentence was NOT overturned a few years ago by the state supreme court.

Yeah, well, but I bet that in the last 30 years no one has died quite like that in Chappaqua or any of the other tony neighborhoods around there. Too much of a coincidence for me; the last person I'd like living on my block is Hitlery and her nefarious hubby.
