The last person to meet Alexander Litvinenko before he succumbed to the agonising effects of radioactive poisoning is a self-professed expert in nuclear materials.

International 'security consultant' Mario Scaramella, who joined Litvinenko for the now infamous clandestine meeting in a London sushi bar, headed an organisation which tracked dumped nuclear waste, including Soviet nuclear missiles left over from the Cold War.

Sushi bar man is nuclear waste expert. . . .

I never liked sushi. Never. And now I know why. That outer covering, looking all shriveled black and nasty? Now we all know...

This is one of those threads that shows me just how little time people spend reading anything past the headline.

Haven't you noticed the best part of the turkey is the skin? Eat the headline, eat the skin. Forget the dry part, just get the tasty part.

Mr. Gordon Thomas, a famous British investigative journalist and intelligence author, told me he had obtained information from MI5 and MI6 sources that the rare isotope came from China. Was the notorious Chinese intelligence service interested in assassinating former KGB-FSB spy, Alexander Litvinenko? If so, perhaps only for money.

Good grief, it's getting deep now. I suspect Walmart will be questioned any day now.

It`s all in the translation...Like Spaten beer means ummmmm, Spit beer, yeah that`s it, in German, so too does Putin mean ummmmmm, uh Kaput, yeah, in some language.

Spaten is spade (not spit) in German. Therefore the trademark of that beer is a... you guessed it... spade!

I guess people that can't fish can always eat bait.

Hey speaking of Spaten, if you ever seen that movie Saving Private Ryan, the part when the German and the American get into the knife fight in the building and the German wrestles the knife away and slowly sticks it into the Americans heart, while doing it the German says something about Spaten. I always thought it was bizarre because maybe he was talking about the beer, maybe saying "After I kill you I`m having a beer?" Now you say it means spade, can it mean he was talking about the beer also? Or maybe he was saying he was going to bury him with a spade. Either way, that was the sickest scene in that movie.

I have to see that particular scene again... Can't remember exactly what he said. But since every (German) soldier had a Spaten (spade) with him (and it's rather dubious that a commercial name for a beer brand get's used by a movie in a negative context...), I guess it's about killing or burying him with a spade.

As Putin said just the other day; "Mafia is not a Russian word."

Did he really say that? How Clintonesque. Did someone tell him "Soviet" is a Russian word, as in "Soviet Socialist Republics," synonymous with communism?

Yes, he (Putin) said it. Putin has had some difficulty lately with the EU.

Here's an excerpt from the BBC article.

EU and Russia risk summit fiasco
By Stephen Mulvey
EU reporter, BBC News

Just as it seemed the EU's relations with Russia could not get any worse, they seem to be heading precisely that way.

A month ago, at an EU summit in the Finnish town Lahti, tempers flared as EU leaders tackled President Vladimir Putin on human rights, corruption, Chechnya and Georgia.

The Lahti summit was not a happy occasion
The Russian leader reportedly struck back with barbed comments about corruption in Italy and Spain - pointing out that "mafia" is not a Russian word.

To make matters worse, the EU leaders only just presented a united front to Mr Putin on energy policy, their chief goal.

A month later and the scene appears set for more of the same at the EU-Russia summit in Helsinki.

The summit was meant to see the launch of negotiations on a new strategic partnership agreement between the EU and Russia.

But Poland - one of the countries which criticised Russia most sharply at Lahti - has vetoed the start of the talks, in a dispute over a Russian embargo on Polish meat and plant products.

If the talks do not start in Helsinki, the summit risks being labelled a farce.
