Video: Rangel says men join the army only if they can't have "a decent career"

Hence hgis support for the draft. If even our volunteers are there voluntary, why shouldn't everyone be?

I want to make it abundantly clear: if there's anyone who believes that these youngsters want to fight, as the Pentagon and some generals have said, you can just forget about it. No young, bright individual wants to fight just because of a bonus and just because of educational benefits. And most all of them come from communitiies of very, very high unemployment. If a young fella has an option of having a decent career or joining the army to fight in Iraq, you can bet your life that he would not be in Iraq.

Riiiggghhhttt. Sure, no one serving in the military is there because they want to serve this country. Sure, you bet.

You can just feel the love coming from Rangel towards the military, can't you? /sarc.

Keep taking Rangel, keep talking.
You will endear yourself further to the heroes of this nation just as Kerry did.

The moment I heard John Kerry's so-called "joke" I knew at that moment he was talking about the draft.

WOW..I never in a million years thought I would agree with Rangel, but you know what...he is RIGHT!

Many of the people who sign up don't do it for the benefits or the bonus...they sign up because they love this Country and they believe FREEDOM is worth dying for!

Of course the America haters, blame America leftist commies wouldn't understand that and they NEVER will!

Last May's service academy graduates of the Class of 2006 swore the oath after 9/11, knowing full well that they would be going into harm's way once commissioned.

The best and the brightest had plenty of options, yet they chose to serve anyway.

At the Naval Academy, when it came to service selection; aviation, surface Navy, submarine Navy or Marines, requests for the Marine Corps set a record. The Navy accepted a record number.

And this despite most assuredly becoming Platoon Leaders in Iraq after The Basic School at Quantico. And knowing the costs of war, having attended memorials and funerals for upperclassmen who mentored them before graduating and leaving for war.

And by the way....as you watch the march on to the field of Saturday's Army Navy game, the Midshipman in charge of the Brigade, known as the "Midshipman Captain", already has his degree from University of Southern California (USC).

The only loser without options I see in this debate is Charlie Rangel.

rangel may be a veteran of the Korean "Conflict" but he is now nothing more than a race-baiting hustler from one of the worst areas of the USA. Whenever I see the visage of his pomaded hair and pencil mustache and hear the vitriol he spews about America and Americans I change the channel as quickly as I can before I hurl. Traitor!

Rangle is bitter about his experience in Truman's miserable Army in Korea where I was too. We were poorly trained and equipped and shabby looking.

Rangle doesn't appreciate how much better trained and better looking soldiers are in Bush's Army, and I hope get more respect from the Marines.

Charlie wants to promote his liberal, bumper sticker, "logic", so the facts don't matter.

Most liberals are comfortable spouting an assumption that has no basis in fact, but supports a sterotype that promotes their agenda.

Rangle is bitter

Rangel is bitter alright! But, IMHO, his bitterness is political and he would use 'anything' to erase his bitterness. Next he will advertise for sale the soul of his mother so that democs can control the WH, House and Senate.

What is it that makes old bitter people like Charlie hang onto political office? He should retire and count his blessings........

If Rangel’s serious about addressing economic inequality in the military, there’s an easy way to do it without imposing a draft. Simply repeal all major economic incentives to enlistment.

Actually, there's an even better way -- give each veteran one "GET OUT OF INCOME TAX FREE" card for every few years of honorable service (transferrable to heirs if KIA). That would be more valuable to the (supposedly) military-averse Eeeevil Rich... and would salt the population with examples of how much better life can be when Uncle Sam isn't in your wallet....

Black men who could use the education and the experience don't join up and wind up with no career.

"Rangle is bitter about his experience in Truman's miserable Army in Korea where I was too."

That's what I figured. Was he drafted, too? Anyway, military service hasn't seemed to hurt his career.
