"He was an alcoholic who collected fossils, glass eyes, light bulbs and snare drums." Glass eyes? That's all the rage today in Mensa.

His son is 35.
He was 52.
He was born Mark David, married at 17 and had a son, then he later divorced his wife and left her to raise the son.
the son's name was Malachi and he goes by his mother's last name, Ritscher.
At some point, Mark David decided to change his own name to his son's name and legally became Malachi Ritscher just like his son.

I'm more fond of the idea of politician immolation, even if it does have to be assisted.

"He was different people at different instances and so, so erratic. I loved him no doubt, but he was a very lonely and tragic man," said Ritscher, 35, who is estranged from the rest of the family Nope .. no mental illness according to the family

"His son, who shares the same name as his father, said his father was trying to cope with mental illness. Suicide seemed to be the next step, and the war was a way to give his death meaning. "
This is really a sad story whether one supports the war or not, and most of the comments on this thread are abhorrent and unchristian

Ritscher, a frequent anti-war protester, stood by an off-ramp in downtown Chicago near a statue of a giant flame, set up a video camera,....Can't wait for the video to make YouTube....

I must admire this man's initiative, and wonder why some politicians can't show the same determination.

"(What if you set yourself on fire for Iraq & nobody cared?)" protester Ritscher,
set himself aflame for peace
pass the marshmallows
(yes, it is cold, but I blame his family for feeding his delusions. Maybe hating America is not a good idea after all you stupid liberals)

He told his family he was going to commit suicide, and they did nothing? No wonder he was depressed. Aside from that, the AP only considers this newsworthy because he ostensibly did this to protest our Iraq policy.

I was told by a Buddhist Monk from Brooklyn who was in Nha Trang Viet Nam that there is supposedly very little pain. They were instructed to take a deep breath and inhale the flames and the shock to the central nervous system causes instant death. Obviously no one has ever verified that it works like that, but that is what the Monk told me.

"Come on light myself on fire.
Come on light myself on fire.
Come on light myself on - FIRE!
You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Iraq is not a real quagmire."

Most of the accounts of people being burned at the stake that I have read usually involve some screaming.
