Terri's Story
Terri Schindler Schiavo Foundation ^ | December 3,2006 | Schindler Foundation

Posted on 12/03/2006 3:03:26 AM PST by 8mmMauser

Theresa Marie Schindler was born to Robert and Mary Schindler on December 3, 1963. She was the first of three children the Schindlers would have.

Terri was a shy, but comical, child who had an affinity for music, animals and the arts. She kept a small circle of friends and was dear to schoolmates, neighboring families and her own extended family.

Following high school, Terri came into her own. She developed a knack for sketching and doodling. She enjoyed outings with her friends. She was an adoptive mother to the family’s dog, Bucky.

Terri attended Catholic School while growing up and remained close to her faith throughout her life.

In 1983, Terri met Michael Schiavo at Bucks County Community College and the two began dating. He was the first romantic interest Terri had.

The couple was engaged within a few months and married a year later at Terri’s church in Southampton, Pa. She was 21.

In 1986, Terri and Michael relocated to Pinellas County, Florida and her parents followed three months later.

In 1990, at the age of 26, Terri suffered a mysterious cardio-respiratory arrest for which no cause has ever been determined. She was diagnosed with hypoxic encephalopathy – neurological injury caused by lack of oxygen to the brain. Terri was placed on a ventilator, but was soon able to breathe on her own and maintain vital function. She remained in a severely compromised neurological state and was provided a PEG tube to ensure the safe delivery of nourishment and hydration.

On March 31, 2005, Terri Schindler Schiavo died of marked dehydration following more than 13 days without nutrition or hydration under the order of Circuit Court Judge, George W. Greer of the Pinellas-Pasco’s Sixth Judicial Court. Terri was 41.

Plus and minus on Tom Delay from RenewAmerica...

......................

Dear Mr. DeLay,

I'd like to begin by welcoming you to the blogosphere. I'm so glad you have discovered the power of this medium to communicate directly with the grassroots of America. I'm also glad to hear your rhetoric about a need for Republicans to return to first principles.

However, there's an aspect of this whole business I find troubling. There's no mention of your own record in Congress in all of this. While you used your skill as a Whip and leader to obtain the votes necessary to attempt to save the life of Terri Schiavo, and forever earned the scorn of Democrats by getting the US House in the waning days of the 106th Congress to call Bill Clinton to account.

Yet, your leadership skills were not always exercised for such noble purposes. In 2003, you worked with the White House to coerce members of Congress to vote for the Medicare Reform bill. You kept the vote open for hours to get this bill passed despite the fact it was the largest expansion of government since the Great Society.

Open letter to Tom Delay

Hmm,...

And in an unusual few months, he upset most Floridians by trying to keep brain-damaged Terri Schiavo alive and angered some of his own conservative Christian base for failing to do so.

JOHNSON'S HEALTH

GOP ghouls

Whatever happened to the GOP's so-called culture of life? These are the same people who kept insisting Terri Schiavo was a vibrant young woman, other than that 15-year coma.

So how come the culture of life folks are suddenly going all Dr. Kevorkian on us when it's a Democratic senator -- South Dakota's Tim Johnson -- in the hospital? This round-the-clock ghoulish speculation is beyond sick. Vultures show more discretion and class.

There is not a fistful of humor in a basketful of these guys. They are dead serious. Ping to wagglebee thread on more on the Ukrainian baby parts fabrications.

In the midst of growing interest in reports of a gruesome stem-cell and human-organ black market that traffics in newborn babies taken from their mothers, an investigator looking into the matter has been sacked "for political reasons," she says, because she was getting too close to the truth.

Several reports in British papers last week told the story of a video showing a post-mortem examination of infants of Ukrainian mothers who believe their babies were stolen from them at birth.

The video was given to reporters by a charity worker representing 300 families who believe their healthy babies were falsely declared dead by staff at a maternity hospital in the Ukraine's most easterly city of Kharkiv.

>> Normal people didn't kill Terri.

Now there's an understatment if I ever heard one. Wouldn't that make a great book title? Almost writes itself. One chapter per rogue judge, homicidal HINO, moonbeam lawyer, Dr. Death, the Bitch of Buchenwald, a desperate floozy and other assorted weirdos and geeks. We could probably arrange a cameo guest appearance by Tyrone Power in Nightmare Alley. He'd fit right in.

Amen, and there's another whole book. Possible starting point: Horace Walpole's observation (18th century), "Life is a comedy for those who think... and a tragedy for those who feel."

In the Florida ISN'T IT IRONIC category:

The last death row inmate to be executed by lethal injection's name was ANGEL. (Angel means messenger.) Yes, the guy was a killer. However, his death was cruel and no doubt painful.

Maybe Angel's message to us is that Florida FAILED to keep the living (Terri) alive and Florida cannot properly execute the condemned.

Someone's legacy is brimming with irony.

However, the pain he suffered was nothing compared to what Terri endured, yet he seems to get a lot more sympathy than she did.

Oh, and let's not forget this little tidbid: TERRI DIDN'T COMMIT ANY CRIMES, SHE WAS THE VICTIM OF A CRIME!

Poor Ted, he may of felt a little pain for a few milliseconds down there in Florida.

Awww. Poor guy. Should have used old Sparky on him. Or should have dehydrated him. That way he would have gone with a smile of euphoria on his face.

"Michael Schiavo Democrats" has a certain defining ring...

Out of the strange dead air silence of NPR background non-sound comes Diane Rhem. Only reading it here, I can imagine the sounds of her voice.

........................................

Monday's first hour of National Public Radio's Diane Rehm show out of Washington focused on the health and political ramifications of Sen. Tim Johnson's brain surgery. Guests were Norman Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute and CNN medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Early in the show (about 7 and a half minutes in), Rehm grew a little crass, asking if Sen. Johnson's family could ruin the slender majority the Democrats hold in the upper chamber. Consider this through the lens of the Terri Schiavo debate, and see the liberal flip-flop coming:

Rehm: "What’s if Johnson’s family were to say ‘Tim Johnson can no longer serve’? Do they have the right to do that?"

Ornstein: "Uh, basically, no. I suppose you can imagine a set of circumstances under which he was in such awful condition, clearly deteriorating, moving towards death, where there might be a broader consensus in the Senate and in the society, but otherwise, no. It’s within his control. And again, we’ve had examples in the past where family members wanted to cut those ties, end the kind of torture, in a way, they were going through, but do not have the legal authority to do so."

Can you imagine the spectacle if the Johnson family wanted a certain course of care for Senator Johnson, and the Michael Schiavo Democrats were saying no, the guardians have no say? Didn't they want the Washington politicians out of the debate?

This site is entitled Real Strange News. It is strange enough so I can't understand the author although I understand the story plainly enough.

..........................

If you thought the state overstepped its bounds in the Terry Schiavo case, or if you are a hopeless romantic, this story's for you. Joseph Perez, an 84-year-old war vet, is facing life in prison for breaking his debilitated wife out of her Michigan nursing home and moving her to his place in Florida where they lived together for almost a year. "The alleged victim," who suffered a stroke 13-years-ago and needs special care, had been taken away from Perez in 2005, after Adult Protective Services ruled he couldn't adequately care for her. According to defense lawyer Azhar Sheikh though, his client "was just trying to help his wife" who was miserable in the nursing home and "didn't want him to leave when he came to visit."

Carrie K. Hutchens from the Dakota Voice...

..............................

We have Texas with the "Futile Care Law", which appears to be self-serving and with no true supervision over who gets on these committees that make the decision between life and death even when it is in spite of patient and family wishes. (What better job could there be for a serial killer type?)

We have Judge George Greer in Florida who gets to not only decide that Terri Schiavo wouldn't want a feeding tube -- he orders that she die by starvation and dehydration. He orders that she will not be fed or given liquids by mouth even if by some means she shows that was her wish. His order was equal to an execution. His order was equal to a pillow being placed over the face of one that continued to breathe after a ventilator was removed. However, choking or suffocating to death would have been faster and less horrendous than dying such a slow and hideous death by torture as was the death of Terri Schiavo.

The round the bend and nudging us to move faster than we really ought to, should give us a signal that we better be taking a look at what is happening around us.
