MOSCOW: A former bodyguard to Russian President Vladimir Putin was murdered with a poison that produced symptoms remarkably similar to those that killed former spy Alexander Litvinenko, it emerged yesterday.
Roman Tsepov died, aged 42, in 2004 after suffering severe radiation sickness brought on by a mystery substance he had ingested with food or drink.
The case suggests that use of radioactive poisons - similar to the polonium-210 that killed Litvinenko - may be more widespread than previously thought.
Tsepov, nicknamed King of the Shadows, is said to have had several powerful enemies but the identity of his killer has never come to light.
He was a graduate of the supreme military commander school of the Russian Interior Ministry and served with the interior troops. In the early 1990s, he set up Baltic-Escort, a security business that provided bodyguard services to Anatoly Sobchak, the then mayor of St Petersburg, and his deputy, Mr Putin.
Tsepov survived three murder attempts in the 1990s. His friends believe his ties to lucrative businesses in Russia could have made him a target but claim he was not linked to a mafia gang.
In September 2004, he was admitted to Sverdlov hospital in St Petersburg with severe food poisoning.
As in the case of Litvinenko, doctors were baffled as his condition grew worse over the first two weeks.
He began to show classic symptoms of radiation sickness: he grew pale, his hair fell out and his white blood cell count fell.
He died before he could be taken to a specialist hospital in Germany.
The city prosecutor's office in St Petersburg has described the case as a "premeditated murder".

Putie, Putie, Putie just may have a list as long as Clinton's.
sort of brings a whole new meaning to the term "nuclear threat," eh?
Many freepers kindly helped to get a FRhomepage organized on Internet Explorer. It should look organized, now.
no comment.
The way things are unfolding it may even be longer.
Who does this Putin think he is, Bill Clinton?
Putin is making sure Iran joins The Club real soon.
I don't think it's in his interest to do that. He holds no leverage over them. They have plenty of oil of their own, and he knows they are too unstable to trust with ultimate destructive force. If anything, he's trying to use them as a pawn. Very risky game for him, I'd guess.

Western heads of state are currently still playing the same extremely dangerous appeasement game with the Kremlin's top tyrant as they did in the late 1930's with another beast in the making. We are more then cognizant of the rest of that history.
Hugo Chavez is getting another Putin present:
MOSCOW, November 30 (RIA Novosti) - Russia has shipped the first two Su-30MK2 multi-role fighters to Venezuela under a contract signed in July 2006, an aircraft manufacturing industry official said Thursday.
Russia signed $1-billion contracts on supplies of 24 Su-30MK2 Flanker fighters and 30 helicopters to Venezuela prior to this year's visit to Russia by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, triggering criticism from Washington, which regards the Venezuelan regime as a potential security threat in the region.
"The first Su-30MK2 fighters for the Venezuelan air force have been transported to Moscow by an An-124 Condor transport plane, and later they will be shipped to Venezuela," the official said, adding that two more fighters will be delivered to the Latin American country by the end of 2006.
Russian-made fighters will substitute American F-16 and French Mirage fighters currently deployed by the Venezuelan air force.
The Su-30MK2 is an export version of a formidable Su-27 Flanker air-superiority fighter capable of accomplishing a wide variety of combat missions at significant distances from the home base, in any weather conditions and severe jamming environment, both by day and night. source
Good job there M. Espinola.
Putin is using the worlds evil to help raise russia and tweak the U.S.
It is obvious that Russia hasn't moved on from the dark days of communism.
After some 70 years of communism, today's top Kremlin boss has been on a massive public relations deceptive game directed at fooling the West while arming the most diabolical enemies of mankind, however these endless KGB interlinked murders now have the whole world (except heads of state) demanding answers from Moscow. Putin has thus far responded with, "It's nonsense".
"Putin is using the worlds evil to help raise russia and tweak the U.S."
That's right. He has also been coning the Western elected officials since he assuming & expanding his dictatorial power-base through the removal of vocal opposition. The world is waking up, when shall the elected officials?
Perhaps. I don't think the current administration is being fooled. If I'm not, they're not.
most of our "leaders" don't give a damn.
Quite obviously.
