Three students at Pine Ridge High beat up a 16-year-old-freshman on campus Monday as part of an initiation into the notorious Crips street gang, officials said. The boy lost a tooth and suffered cuts and bruises while willingly accepting the "beatdown" from fellow students when they were hanging out at the racquetball courts before classes began. Officials say all three are members of the Crips, a well-known street gang whose rivals are the Bloods. Daquan told investigators he found the knife on the ground, officials said. Brian Soto, a 15-year-old student who claims to be with the Crips, was brought in for questioning about the fight and was later arrested on charges of possessing a weapon on campus when investigators caught him with a lock-blade knife, which he said he used to protect himself from rival gang members. School administrators heard rumors about the early-morning fight but didn't have evidence of it until around lunchtime, said Pine Ridge Principal Michael Mongelli.
School officials were reluctant to say it was gang-related. "In our student code of conduct we don't refer to it as gangs," said Nancy Wait, a spokeswoman for Volusia County schools. "We refer to it as secret societies." Students could be expelled for being a member of a "secret society," a major offense in the school district's code.
Wait said the superintendent would be meeting with Pine Ridge officials about the brawl. Monday's altercation is the second secret-society fight Pine Ridge has dealt with this school year, Wait said. But that doesn't mean there's a gang problem on campus, the school's principal said. "Are there kids in groups? Yes," Mongelli said. "When you say there's a problem, that's saying that there are brawls in my halls, and that's not true."

what the heck is a 16 year old freshman ?
Evidently a prime candidate for a "secret society".
Yeah, the Masons and the Skull and Bones have been battling the Crips for control of the school parking lot. ;)
Pine Ridge not Pine Hills ping
"In our student code of conduct we don't refer to it as gangs,"
And that changes what exactly?
Racquetball court? Crips? Who has control of the back nine? Or the tennis courts?
"In our student code of conduct we don't refer to it as gangs," said Nancy Wait, a spokeswoman for Volusia County schools. "We refer to it as secret societies."Well isn't that special?
Officials say all three are members of the Crips, a well-known street gang whose rivals are the Bloods.Don't they mean "well-known street secret society"?
These reporters really ought to get their facts straight.
By the way, do the Crips have the same secret decoder rings as the Bloods do, or are they different colors?
That which we call a gang, by any other name, will still be a bunch of blood-thirsty violence-whoring punks.
its not very secret when they're walking around wearing their colours, their hats cocked off to the side, flashing signs, walking in large groups, etc.
I thought "secret" meant that no one was supposed to know who they are.
Boy, is that the dumbest piece of PC BS you've ever read, or what?
"Secret societies," indeed.
Maybe they are Tongs. Gezzzzzzz, what an air.
I guess it's a good thing that (1) the VRWC is not secret, and (2) I didn't go to Volusia County schools.
Girl haters club is definitely the baddest of the bad.
What is the world coming to?
At this school, apparently gifted!
