Report: Lufthansa plans big 747 order Tuesday December 5, 1:38 pm ET

German airline Lufthansa AG plans to order at least 20 of Boeing's new 747-8 jumbo airplanes and take options for 20 additional planes, according to a report on the Wall Street Journal Web site. The online report said the 20 firm orders, valued at $5 billion at list prices, came at the expense of Chicago-based Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA - News) rival Airbus and its competing A380 jumbo aircraft.

Boeing has received orders for its new 747-8 freighter model but the Lufthansa order would be the first order for the passenger version of the plane, which is larger and more fuel efficient than the current 747-400 model. The plane, which will be built in Everett, is expected to enter service in 2010.

The Journal added that something could happen at the last minute to delay the deal, which is expected to be announced Wednesday.

here is the a380 killer,

the noise footprint is smaller than the 747-400.

467 passengers too.

I bet the turbulance will continue to be 1/2 of the a380.

This is good news for Boeing share holders and bad news for france.

this is were it's going to hurt the A-380 , the weight, and since Boeing is closing the gap of amount of seats/Pax, this is going to be something the A-380 has to worry about ( THE WEIGHT ).

" While acknowledging that the A380’s all-new wing – versus a modified version of the 747-400’s on the -8 – gives it an aerodynamic advantage, Baseler says that in other measures it is advantage Boeing. “The A380 is between 10% and 16% per seat heavier than the 747-8. The 747-8’s OEW [operating empty weight] per seat is 453kg [998lb] compared with 498kg per seat [using Airbus’s brochure weight numbers] for the A380,” says Baseler. He says Boeing calculates the A380 is over 20% heavier per seat than the 747-400, and to match its structural efficiency “the A380 needs to be stretched to over 650 seats”. The net result of these efficiencies is that the 747-8I’s operating costs are 22% lower than the A380’s per trip and 6% lower per seat, says Baseler "

Too Bad France! I'm sure, though, that Air Sudan will turn to Airbus for all their jumbo jet needs. [snicker]
