Report: Lufthansa plans big 747 order Tuesday December 5, 1:38 pm ET

German airline Lufthansa AG plans to order at least 20 of Boeing's new 747-8 jumbo airplanes and take options for 20 additional planes, according to a report on the Wall Street Journal Web site. The online report said the 20 firm orders, valued at $5 billion at list prices, came at the expense of Chicago-based Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA - News) rival Airbus and its competing A380 jumbo aircraft.

Boeing has received orders for its new 747-8 freighter model but the Lufthansa order would be the first order for the passenger version of the plane, which is larger and more fuel efficient than the current 747-400 model. The plane, which will be built in Everett, is expected to enter service in 2010.

The Journal added that something could happen at the last minute to delay the deal, which is expected to be announced Wednesday.

And this is only the beginning. Expect British Airways and Japan Airlines to jump in with 747-8 orders within the next two years, since these two airlines have less issues with slot restrictions at their home airports.

Lufthansa hasn't cancelled their A380 orders...yet.

They won't. They need both aircraft. One type for the 420 passenger, the other for the 550 passenger niche. And if Lufthansa continues to do well, the will probably even order the 650 passenger A380-900 in a few years.

Lufthansa also ordered 6 A340s as well as the 747-8i. I guess Lufthansa wants to exactly match the aircraft to the route!
