Villanova U. locked down after shooting

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova University was locked down for several hours after a suspected prowler fired shots at police and escaped early Wednesday, authorities said.

No injuries were reported.

Police searched the campus in the affluent Philadelphia suburb with infrared cameras, police dogs and a state helicopter but failed to locate the shooter, authorities said.

Police had received reports of the prowler around 3:15 a.m. and he shot at them when they attempted to question him, authorities said. He later fired on more officers arriving as backup.

Police called off the search at Villanova around 10:20 a.m., and classes resumed about an hour later, university spokeswoman Barbara Clement said.

The university lockdown began around 4 a.m. and "at no time were any students at risk," Clement said. Additional university security officers will be on campus Wednesday night, she added.

Other schools in the area also opened several hours late or closed for the day because of the search.

I hope no one is injured in this.

Whenever I see Villanova though, I cannot help but think of the '85 NCAA finals and what a great Cinderella story that was.

I still remember the game and the pride on the face of my boss the next day (he being a Villanova grad).

They just found a second body on my son's University grounds this morning. The last body was found dumped in a lake a few years back. This one was in his idling car with a bullet in his head, local news reports. Son had decided the campus environment was not a place he wanted to be a few weeks back and decided to transfer to another school. Says the drugs, alcohol and crime was making him watch his back more than his text books. Don't know that anyplace else will be better. What a way to get an education!

Could be a student. They have 10,610 students. They should narrow down the search by rounding up all the Villanova students who have had five or more drinks in the last 24 hours.

That will get them down to a managable 10,608.

I live nearby Villanova. The incident occurred in a residential area south of the campus and the assailant was not a student. I am grateful that no officers were hurt and I hope they apprehend this dangerous thug

I live about a half mile from where the incident occured. There have been SWAT teams, dogs, and helicopters all over the place for most of the day but last I heard, they had scaled back on the search. Local schools opened a few hours late. We're still hoping to hear they got the guy.

The thing I remember most is Villanova shooting 79% for the game -- not from the line, from the FLOOR...

Yeah, Duane McClain, Gary McClain, Ed Pinkney, Harold Jensen -- I know I'm leaving out one of the best guys -- great team under Massamino. My father's alma mater, and I'm over there tomorrow morning on business! I'll be sure to wear some comfortable bullet-proof clothing.
