STUTTGART, Germany — Mercedes-Benz said it is rolling out a second diesel offering for its flagship S-Class lineup this month, a new 2006 S420 CDI.

The latest edition to the S-Class lineup develops 320 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque from a 3996cc CDI engine with twin turbochargers. The engine is mated to a standard seven-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel gearshift controls.

The S420 CDI sprints from zero to 62 mph in 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 155 mph. The company said the more powerful diesel model replaces the V8-powered S400 CDI.

Standard features include automatic climate controls, 17-inch five-spoke light alloy wheels, front and rear side airbags, tinted laminated glass and speed-sensitive power steering. The extended-wheelbase model adds leather upholstery, a power sunroof and a rear bench seat with power-adjustable outer seats.

Mercedes-Benz said the short-wheelbase version of the S420 CDI starts at the equivalent of $112,300, and the long-wheelbase version starts at the equivalent of $122,475.

What this means to you: Mercedes powers up its diesel lineup — at least for European customers.

Sounds cool like their other products, but the electronics are bad. My wife wanted one bad, but after friends and family experiences no thanks. As my brother said: "they used to make the finest automobiles in the world; now they make cars."

Until the CA. Air resources board can figure out how they want to implement refilling the Urea injection on Mercedes' blu tec, us and four other states won't be seeing this vehicle or their V6 diesel either.

... or their four-cylinder models (e.g., B200 CDi) - Sigh!

It boggles my mind that MB (DMX), BMW, VW, Audi, Volvo, Toyota, Mitsubishi & Saab can't be bothered to bring more diesels into the U.S. market.

Sure VW brings in a few, but none of the interesting variants (like a five door all wheel drive diesel Golf).

DMX gives us the E-Class and a few Jeeps using MB motors, but nothing entry level.

I wonder how much of the fault of this lies in CA, MA and NY virtually closing their markets off to new diesel car sales?

I had a Mercedes-Benz, in fact, a couple different ones.

One was a 170Sb, 1953, a four-cylinder, gasoline-powered "family" four-door sedan. Looked like a 1938 Packard Clipper, and had rear-hinged "suicide" front doors.

The second one was a 220a, 1954, predecessor model to the 220S, and nearly identical, except for the single carburetor and a little less exterior trim. So I had been up there in that high stratosphere of automobile ownership, fifty years ago.

I have just had other priorities since then, and never got back to that ambition again.

Yes, if you want to spend that much for a somewhat "green" car, wait a few months for the upcoming Lexus LS600hL - V8 + hybrid (giving V12 equivalent power) with very cool technology and much, much better reliability.

I am sure an afternoon with a PCM programmer in the right hands could improve upon those number substantially.

I think they've got that stuff straightened out now. The bad years were around 1998-2003.

There's nothing "green" about hybrids. They are a sham.

And Toyota's reliability is showing some cracks.

I don't think they do now, but I would like to see it at least discussed - in NASCAR and the IRL. Specifically, a turbo charged compression ignition engine. Let the builders innovate on the fuel. 20%-30% Nitromethane would be fun!

Racing has grown a bit boring of late. All the series run spec engines and fuel. I would like to see innovation brought back to the sport.

Boy, I never thought I'd see the words "diesel" and "sprint" in the same article. Zero to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds ain't bad. There's faster out there, but an S-class is a lot of car to get moving, so that's extremely good performance, especially for a diesel.

Whew! For awhile there I was afraid the wife wouldn't be able to get one too!

You know, this is one of the few times where I think that the Commerce Clause should be invoked. Why should one or a few states be able to effectively (which is to say, in the realm of commercial practicality) close down the importation of something that is permitted everywhere else?

Not true. It was Lefty Frizzell. And Hank Williams.

Senior.
