Kirk Douglas Issues Editorial on His 90th Birthday
yahoo News ^ | December 9, 2006 | Kirk Douglas

Posted on 12/11/2006 5:04:05 AM PST by Mel Gibson

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- My name is Kirk Douglas. You may know me. If you don't ... Google me. I was a movie star and I'm Michael Douglas' dad, Catherine Zeta-Jones' father-in-law, and the grandparents of their two children. Today I celebrate my 90th birthday.

I have a message to convey to America's young people. A 90th birthday is special. In my case, this birthday is not only special but miraculous. I survived World War II, a helicopter crash, a stroke, and two new knees.

It's a tradition that when a "birthday boy" stands over his cake he makes a silent wish for his life and then blows out the candles. I have followed that tradition for 89 years but on my 90th birthday, I have decided to rebel. Instead of making a silent wish for myself, I want to make a LOUD wish for THE WORLD.

Let's face it: THE WORLD IS IN A MESS and you are inheriting it. Generation Y, you are on the cusp. You are the group facing many problems: abject poverty, global warming, genocide, AIDS, and suicide bombers to name a few. These problems exist, and the world is silent. We have done very little to solve these problems. Now, we leave it to you. You have to fix it because the situation is intolerable

The movie, Spartacus is one of my favorite films, I have difficulty watching the end of the film (disturbing), the crucifixion with Spartacus, Kirk Douglas (nailed to the cross) watching his baby son below, "Spartacus, your son is free!"

"I want to be champeeon!"

Mr. Douglas is correct. But why Gen-Y? Us Gen-X-ers are at least a little more mature and will be coming into power in the next 10-15 years.

I was a movie star and I'm Michael Douglas' dad, Catherine Zeta-Jones' father-in-law, and the grandparents [sic] of their two children.

That's all very nice. But Michael Douglas was married to someone else previously, and if I'm not mistaken, Michael and that wife had children (someone correct me if I'm wrong, please)... so, isn't Kirk also the grandfather of those children? LOL. How soon people forget.

That was Charlton Heston, not Kirk Douglas.

I like how he mentions "suicide bombers" as a threat instead of George W. Bush. Pretty unusual for Hollywood.

Those were my thoughts as well - also - doesn't he have other children, not just Michael? That's odd he would leave them out.

Of course he knows, silly. He is mentioning the two grandchildren as the children of Michael and Zeta-Jones only...remember he is speaking to GenY-ers and trying to connect with what they know. Remember the context.

Global warming? The real problem seems to be growing global stupidity. Like the sun in the morning, it's moving from (mid)east to the west.

...Kirk Douglas' best role was as Paul Eddington, "In Harm's Way'...

I thought he was dead (or maybe I'm thinking of Frank Gorshin).

When was the world ever a peaceful paradise with no suffering or strife...it is the human condition for the world to be in "a mess"...But, in other news--the Giants beat the Panthers 27 to 13...

I hope to just remember my name when I'm ninety. My father-in-law is 76 with alzheimer's and doesn't remember us.

I think he's being self deprecating, in that he's assuming that people don't know who he is, thus he's naming his most famous relatives.
