"So the moral of the story is if you want to be popular with the European Union and the United Nations you take the Carter\Clinton foreign policy track of aiding and abetting Islamic fascism every chance you get.Let some poor s.o.b. Republican President have to deal with the results of those policies and take the heat of being a "warmonger" from the world, while these two birds go around giving speechs about how bad things are now and how great they were when they were in the White House !!!"

Yes, that's it in a nutshell.

I was working (TDY) in Teheran in 1975. It was my first time to the middle east and I was amazed at the wide avenues, and the people there seemed to be buzzing about as if they were in Manhattan. The traffic was the worst I'd ever seen, and we knew that SAVAK was everywhere. Still, the people seemed to me that they were more interested in making a buck than they were in getting rid of the Shah. Ole Jimmah sure screwed the pooch with his decision to stab America's pal in that neck of the woods.

I'm still waiting for the son, now the Shah in Exile, to retake the country. I believe he is waiting for an opportune time because I know he has more than enough support in Iran. Not every Iranian that was enjoying the 20th Century in Iran fled. These are Persians, not Arabs, and they, for the most part, are more culturally diverse than their backwards neighbors. There's a reason why you only see protests against the government in Iran and not in other countries.
I just hope Riza Pahlevi can pull this off while Carter is still alive, just to stick it to him.

Add:

Taking out the leaders of two nations put the thugs of the world on notice that the US was prepared to take action to defend itself.

Thugs understand force.

It was just a matter of time that Hussein would have used a surrogate to do his dirty work - and it wouldn't have taken but a handful of toxin to have done tremendous harm to us.

Agree! However, the loud noises coming from the DemonRATS and some Repubs are undermining the strong message/stand that was originally sent.

"Alexander Haig who was one of Carters top advisors."

I'd like to learn more about this allegation, since I recall nothing of the sort and looking at a dozen or so Haig bio's just now doesn't support it either.

The New York Times of 1 January 1997, reproted that, "Iran Gave $500,000 to Bosnian President's Election Effort, U.S. Says." It further writes: The contributions, delivered by the Iranians in at least two suitcases full of cash, came on the evening of the national elections in September, in which Izetbegovic won a seat on the three-member presidency that is now to govern Bosnia after four years of war, the officials said. . . Iran's presence in Bosnia has exposed President Clinton to sharp criticism, particularly from Republicans on Capitol Hill, who have argued that the administration opened the door for Iran when it decided not to object to the flow of Iranian arms into Bosnia in 1994 in violation of an arms embargo."

Heh. Maybe Bill got a suitcase too.

SAVAK was everywhere

Yes....and it was SAVAK that kept the fundamentalists at bay in Iran back then, and otherwise made sure that Iran was able to emerge from the dark ages, until jimbo carter more-or-less installed Khomeini as Irans new dictator.

They were indeed. Embassy Compound Lore had it that the old man who washed the vehicles in the Motor Pool was a SAVAK colonel. When the Shah fell, and the fundamentalists took over the country, they replaced SAVAK with SAVAMA. "Better the devil you know than the devil you don't...."

Haig was the NATO commander who resigned in 1979, which is not the same thing as being an advisor of Carter.

Pahlavi was pro-American, and domestically oppressive.

If anyone thinks the dear old Shahinshah was oppressive, they should have tried to have a mild disagreemnt with the Ayatollah Khomeini's government. The Shah's biggest mistake was not (supp-) oppressing the islamists hard enough. He supported the Ayatollah in luxurious exile instead of hanging his scrawny carcass from an expressway overpass next to a blown-up mosque.

How quickly we forget that the reason Iran's "Democratic" government had to go was that it was going communist.

Fact of life: Russia wants Persia.
Always has. Always will.
Doesn't matter if it's the
Soviets, the Czar, or this Putin cobra.

The SAVAK was everywhere and the in-country Americans knew it. As you said they kept a lid on fundamentalism. The Shah had an entire hospital, schools and highway infrastructure built as well as being the stabilizing military force in the ME.
