Many American leftists have the same goal as Iran - the destruction of Israel.

Israel is a secular democracy surrounded by brutal religous apartheid states.

the man who won—and deserved—the Nobel Peace Prize for bringing Israel and Egypt together in the Camp David Accords

Uh, Michael, that's not what he got the award for. He got it because he criticized the United States and its President. He hasn't brought any "luster" to being a former president, he has brought disgrace.

If by apartheid Carter means to separate AND mistreat, the comparison fails on the facts. If he means simple separate, then the comparison defeats his own deeply held belief that the 'Palestinians' should have their own country, since he is calling apartheid bad and wrong.

Hoisted on his own petard, boom!

Kinsley should realize that many of his progressive friends openly advocate the notion that Israel is an apartheid state. And they would like to see it disappear

Yes. I took a peek at the comments following the article on Slate. They overwhemlingly reject Kinsleys argument, call Kinsley a traitor, or moron; or both.

There you are. It's simply a political campaign to destroy Israel. Those commenters and Ahmadinejad are on the same side.

"[Carter] was probably the reason the South turned Republican starting in 1980."

You better believe it.

Jay Leno made a comment about him being such a nice man--but I look at him and all I see is hate and stupidity.

I watched an old Twilight Zone episode where a dying, rich father made his daughter and her family put on ghoulish Mardi Gras masks until midnight or risk losing their inheritance.

With the father dead in his skeleton mask, they took their own off and discovered that their faces were forever twisted into what they really were inside: arrogant, vain, cruel, selfish.

I think of those masks every time I see Jimmy Carters face.

Surely, the Iranian Holocaust Deniers Union made an oversight by inviting David Duke but snubbing Dhimmi Peanut.

Any time spent reading The Fray could be equally misused on Kos or DU. Those people are more than 1 or 2 brewskis short of a case.

Carter has always been awful -- some of us were fooled temporarily by his sanctimonious facade.

You won't find many people in GA with anything nice to say about him. Unlike most folks who mellow as they get older, he's just gotten meaner.

And there is a significant group of old-line Southerners who just HATE the Jews and agree with Carter. They seem to be mostly about Carter's age, from small towns, middle class, and they subscribe to the conspiracy theory that the Jews run everything . . . Fortunately that mindset seems to be dying out.

Could there have been a worse president in the 20th Century?

No.

You're right, of course. I was pleasantly surprised to see the article's source, and I was wondering how it would be received. I should probably have guessed at the depth of the vitriol; but hey, hope springs eternal.

I definitely feel worse for the peek.

That is a foolish and unfair comparison, unworthy of the man who won—and deserved—the Nobel Peace Prize for bringing Israel and Egypt together in the Camp David Accords, and who has lent such luster to the imaginary office of former president.

What? That's not why he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. It was for his weak kneed performance giving Kim Il Sung a new nuclear reactor.

My Dad, when Carter made his "walk" down Pennsylvania Avenue on Inauguration Day, along with mewling wife Rosalyn, looked at the two of them on the broadcast and said, "what a couple of phoney baloneys" (I left out a few descriptive words from his observations). I thought Dad was being a little mean because the new President and his wife were trying to show the world that they were simply "regular" folks. I was too young to see through the facade being created by Carter but Dad was right on and he never changed his mind about the little peanut man.

Didn't Dhimmi Carter lobby for the Nobel Prize for twenty years or so? I thought he finally got it as a reward for criticizing George Bush and the Iraq war at every turn.
