Rep. Walter Jones, of North Carolina's 3rd District, has written to the U.S. Department of Justice calling for an investigation of the prosecution of the three indicted Duke men's lacrosse players.
In a letter to U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, the congressman asked the Attorney General to review whether Nifong has committed prosecutorial misconduct.
"Many of my constituents have expressed concern to me [regarding] prosecutorial misconduct," Jones wrote in the letter. "I urge you to look into these matters to ensure that Mr. Nifong's actions have not illegally denied the accused of their civil rights as American citizens."
What you said...but it's way past.
Walter Jones in my opinion is one of the top three to top five members of the Republican congressional delegation. It's too bad people outside of his district don't know him or his views.
Speaking of "prosecutorial misconduct". What's the latest on the Ronnie Earle persecution of Tom DeLay?
They need to investigate his intimidation of witnesses, trying to get them to change their stories to FALSE ones.
They need to investigate his handling of the identification.
They need to investigate ties between his office and prostitutes in town--do they or the police get freebies?
It is a CRIMINAL violation of federal civil rights laws to use color of law to knowing deprive a person of their constitutional rights. Nifong placed these boys under arrest and prosecution, without ANY evidence that they committed the alleged acts. The only witness, the alleged victim, only made allegations against the boys through a tampered-with photo lineup. That equals NO EVIDENCE. The Prosecutor was presented with irrefutable evidence that one or two of the boys were not even there when the alleged acts occurred! That = evidence of innocence. Case closed. Continuing to prosecute is a Criminal violation of federal law. I hope he goes to jail, loses his license and his house is foreclosed to pay for these boys' legal fees. A disgusting piece of trash, this Nifong.
How about prosecution for civil rights violations...
Zounds! It's about time, Alice!
****
He has more confidence in the US Government and the DOJ than I do. They won't do a thing IMHO. Would put money on it.
The basis for the investigation would be the violation of the civil rights of the defendants due to Nifong's misconduct. The question is will the US AG do it?
But...but..but... they're WHITE MALES, they don't HAVE any civil rights!
You mean the case against these guys is still going forward?!
If this gets to trial in Nifong's patch he may well get convictions.
It sure is.
ping.
I'm stunned...
"Walter Jones in my opinion is one of the top three to top five members of the Republican congressional delegation. It's too bad people outside of his district don't know him or his views."
I know Walter and he is - ahem - bizarre in many ways. He is a former Dem and the word is he is considering a party switch. You may want to go a little deeper in your research about this guy.
Actually, the Mother Jones website knows Walter was among the first to call for a timeline for troop removal:
"Last June, along with Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D-Hawaii), Jones introduced a resolution presaging the one his Senate Republican colleagues would pass a few months later, but with one key difference: Jones' version would have required the administration to develop a specific timeline for withdrawal from Iraq. He titled it Homeward Bound."
They need to also pursue criminal charges against the piece of @#$ liar who filed these bogus police reports in the first place.
