MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Clear Channel Radio says high school and college sports are a better fit for listeners here than progressive talk radio.
Those are fightin' words in Madison, a place where politics are fought between Democrats and liberals and "Impeach Bush" yard signs are common.
The decision by the nation's largest operator of radio stations to replace its highly rated progressive talk station here with Fox Sports Radio has sparked a major backlash. Some advertisers have threatened a boycott, more than 5,000 people have signed a petition and a rally is set for Tuesday night to urge the San Antonio-based company to reconsider.
"There is a mix of shock, outrage, disbelief and a little bit of anger," said Valerie Walasek, a 28-year-old listener who helped organize the movement to save the channel. "I'm not really doing that much, but I'm standing in front of thousands of people that really want to keep it on the air."
But so far, the company shows no signs of backing down from the format change planned for Jan. 1.
The company's market manager in Madison, Jeff Tyler, said too many advertisers stayed away from The Mic 92.1 FM because of opposition to the 2-year-old format mixing nationally known liberal talkers such as Al Franken with local hosts who discussed everything from city politics to animal rights.

But some liberals here believe something more sinister is at play in the decision, announced three days after the Nov. 7 election that had the left celebrating Democratic victories across the country.
"I'm wondering if the switch to Rupert Murdoch's Fox Sports means the liberal station was more successful than certain people wanted," listener Yvonne Gagliano wrote in a local newspaper.

Sounds like the typical liberal approach to most of their issues.
Only in a liberal mind can a station that is rated number 11 in the market, be considered "highly rated".
In a large city, like New York, Los Angeles or Chicago, a station can survive being number 11, but not in a market as small as Madison.
Madison is barely within the top 100 markets (#96) in the country.
Keeping em fat dumb and happy.
Sports is an opiate of the masses. It is entertainment as a spectators.
Physical fitness programs are one thing but the American obsession with school sports has done incredible damage to the schools.
Every other nation that defeats Americans hands-down academically have sports programs that are miniscule compared to the average American high school.
I attended grammar schools in England, and Scotland as well as the USA. The British sports facilities are not much beyond what the average American elementary school has today. You don't need much to keep fit.
Yet, their academics (were) far superior to that of the US.
(For the last 20 years they have begun adopting US multicultural, dumbed down agendas. They are still superior but now not as much)
Of course. It's not as though they have jobs or anything more productive to do with their time.
And the joke is, what the free market inflicts on them is what they desire the government to inflict on us.
No wonder liberals are so screwed up - this is like throwing a fit when your parents take away your broccoli and give you a steak instead.
And yet - despite serving the Mad City, aka "25 square miles surrounded by reality - 1310 WIBA-AM is the top-rated AM and #4 overall station - and home of Rush Limbaugh and very popular local conservative host Vicki McKenna.
Obviously, these are the voices of a very small, yet vocal minority.
The libs in Madison have real trouble with free markets, or any other type of reality for that matter. Besides, I'm sure Wisconsin Public Radio will fill any voids in their totally useless lives anyway.
There are other people that don't get their way all the time, too.
If "progressive" radio is such a hot item, perhaps they can buy there own station and sell time to all the
advertisers clamoring for sell aging and young wannabe hippies soap, deodorant, Cherokee hair tampons, and
other products that make life more pleasant for those around them.
The local station that used to have Limbaugh, before the Premier deal, used the outrageous profit from
Limbaugh's show to subsidize less popular, but local offerings.
And there's always private shortwave stations that can be quite cheap to buy time on.

They threw in a "real" commercial with actresses having a mom/daughter talk.
Now that you mention it, it would be interesting to see how those two actresses listed "that" piece of work.
