ping for action
I would recommend that pre-paid cards be hand delivered to the soldiers rather than mailed in. Some of them have been reported to have been intercepted before they got to the intended recipients.
Reminder bump...
BTTT. I just typed in the posters I could think of. Please ping everybody on your lists.
People need to read this.
the staff opening the mail at walter reed are stealing the cards?
I'm not accusing anyone. It's just that there are some people who feel they're more deserving of the soldiers and their families. It's a part of human nature.
ping (for address)
Many freepers can't hand deliver these, as we are all over the country.
You are there, so what is your opinion on what is the most needed and practical things to send?
Phone cards are very important (contact with supporting family members), but also I know these guys and girls come home with very little personal possessions.
In the past two weeks my local TV has featured one young woman and two young men from near here who were severely wounded by IEDs. Any suggestions on what to send? You are there and in contact with these vets, and I trust your judgement.
Bump.
bump
Bump for later
The clothing and toiletries listed are the most needed as most of the wounded come in with next to nothing. Phone cards are next.
Thanks. I know they do come to Walter Reed with only a sheet, nothing else.
I'm going duck hunting next week with a few of these guys who went through Walter Reed in 2003, 2004. One of them told me the only way they could be more excited about this hunt is if the ducks "spoke," quacked, in Arabic. I jokingly asked them if they needed any instruction in shooting a gun!!!!!
One of these guys I know has had 11 surgeries since he came home, and is facing many more. Their rehabilitation is a long process, and I am sure their arrival back here in the states is traumatic, the first step of a long journey.
I have a renewed hope for the future just knowing and being around these young men and women, they are America's best, brightest.
Check the link and give them a call.
One of the military listservs that I am on came out earlier this week and said that Walter Reed can no longer accept packages to 'any wounded soldier'...they have to have a specific addressee.
This is in direct response to this Stars & Stripes article; the packages are overwhelming the staff.
I'm not saying don't send stuff, just check with the family support center before you do!
Operation Uplink is a unique program that keeps military personnel and hospitalized veterans in touch with their families and loved ones by providing them with a free phone card. Using contributions from supporters like you, Operation Uplink purchases phone cards and distributes them to servicemen and women who are separated from those they care about.

Bump for the needs of these soldiers and visiting family.
If any of you have a list, or are interested in donating...
Thanks for the ping! I'll have to see what I can put together, is there a deadline or is this ongoing?
Your hunt should be a good time, and you're a Saint for helping out with such an event! 11 surgeries, I can't even start to imagine.
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my miscellaneous ping list.
