Washington, DC, December 8, 2006-- It was so cold, the ink in my note pen froze. Our toes, our toes! Chemical handwarmers, coffee, layers of clothes -- any way you tried to cope with FReeping in temperatures that dipped into the single digits with every gust of wind, you still had to get in the car periodically and turn on the engine to run the heater. It was so cold, only seven cheese-wads turned out down the street to protest the war, as compared to our 25 pro-troops/pro-mission FReepers and lurkers. We didn't even bother to photograph them.
We fortified ourselves with hot chocolate and coffee,
brownies and coffee cake; but within minutes, the plastic knife snapped in my hand as I tried to saw off a chunk.
What could we have done to keep ourselves warmer?
Well, for starters, we could have invited Al Gore, the inventor of Global Warming, to FReep with us:
Or, we could have brought along some cattle,
who, according to an earlier thread this week, would have generated an abundance of natural warmth:
It was so cold, should we cut 'n' run?
As soon as the Surrender Monkeys abandoned their pretentious vigil ("remembering" the troops they clearly despise) at their 9:00 pm quittin' time, we FReepers had a quick chat. It usually takes another half hour or more for the bus to bring the troops and their families back to Walter Reed after they have dinner downtown, and then we wave to them. We were freezing. We thought of going into a nice warm building on the hospital grounds until the bus came. But the "Murtha moment" soon passed, and we determined to stick it out.

DollyCali from Ohio and lurker Mark from Illinois made the trip to enjoy an ice-cold Walter Reed FReep --
and the Olney FReep and DC Chapter Christmas party the next day.

At last, the bus! We waved our gloves, and they waved to us! Photo by Plea Deal.

Tonight's FReeper honor roll was: Albion Wilde, BufordP, Christopher Lincoln, Cindy-True-Supporter, Doctor Raoul, DoliCali, Fraxinus, GunsAreOK, ILoveW, Just A Nobody, Kristinn, Olgaesq01, PleaDeal, tgslTakoma, Tolerance Sucks Rocks, Tom the Redhunter and VAFlagWaver. We were joined by lurkers and friends Bill from MD, Lurking Conservative Anarchist from PA, Mark from Illinois, Mike from Michigan (WR) and four Young Republicans: Candice, Luke, Matt and Seth.

The bus, and a homeowner's lights on Georgia Avenue, warmed our hearts. Photo by Plea Deal.
It was cold, but we survived.
And the thought of our troops wearing heavy gear and packs halfway around the world, far from home in 115-degree heat, erased all concern for our own temperatures.

If all of you drove in on SUVs, that might have made the temp a bit warmer!
Someday, I really want to make it to a DC FReep. Looks like a lot of fun!

I find it heart warming if not body warming, to know, that the decision making process for the Walter Reed Freep, or for any of life's decisions by Freepers everywhere, is governed not by personal comfort, personal needs, political oneupmanship, angry and divisive ideas, principles, or reasons, but by Love of country, "The Mission", What the men in harms way, are having to endure, and a multiplicity, of thoughts unrelated to me, me, me, I, I, I.
IOW the exact opposite of the apparent thought processes of those with the hate America, hate the war, hate my life, think I'll eat some worms, complex that inhabit something on the order of 30 to 40 percent of the oxygen breathing bipeds of the land. God Bless the steadfastness of those who do so much to honor those great men and women upon whom our liberty and freedoms rest, The Troops.

Great report and pics.
Kudos to everyone who made it to Walter Reed. Real good crowd of FReepers and Young Republicans. Glad to see YRs made it out once again.
With the bitter cold weather, I'm sure glad [Mrs] T and I told everyone in advance that we wouldn't be able to be there last Friday. I hate to be called a 'weeeenie' by anyone - (BufordP) - other than [Mrs] T.
But with , we'll be back.

I do, BiffF does, and more of us have SUVs. I think it is not making a big difference at all. Maybe Algore is not telling the truth.

Great Report Albion Wilde!
What an honor to stand tall
with all the DC FReepers at Walter Reed!
Baby its (VERY) cold outside!!!!
AND WINDY! ~~ I am guessing the wind-chill temp was in single digits. Occasional warm ups in the cars occurred, the wonderful comfort station (thanks Takoma) was a BIG HIT. Like the US Mail FReeping is NOT weather controlled/dependent and Friday night at Walter Reed was meaningful & fun for all participants, despite the chilly weather.
Here are a few more of my offerings of pix from the evening. I find in cold weather, I do NOT take as many pix normally.
Now I really feel out of it.. I did NOT see Ilowew!!! I had thought she had already left the DC area. We were all so bundled up, who knows whom might have been "lurking"!

Lurker Mark & GunsareOK

Olgaesq1, surely the MOST bundled up & cozy looking! I didn't personally meet her (but we did say Hi thru the "brrrrs"!)

Assembling the MOAB

I am grateful my dear FRiend Mark was part of our weekend of FReeping & Festivities. He has gotten links & heard about FR for years. Now we just need a clever and appropriate screen-name for him!!!!
