If you think the eyewitnesses simply misinterpreted the direction of the streak, then it's easier to believe the streak was burning debris from the airplane.
If you don't think the plane was shot at by a missle, there is nothing impossible about the official explanation that the fuel tank exploded. It's not the only time it happened.
