Does Katie Couric's Stumble Signal Hillary Clinton's Fall?
Fox News ^ | Wednesday, December 13, 2006 | Susan Estrich

Posted on 12/14/2006 11:01:04 AM PST by JOAT

“America wasn't truly ready for the first solo woman evening-news anchor, let alone someone smart and attractive with pretensions to sounding puckish and hip...”

Does Katie Couric's Stumble Signal Hillary Clinton's Fall?

You can tell me all the reasons it’s wrong, misguided, and unfair – that Katie is only one woman, what about Diane Sawyer, what about the quality of her show, thank you very much, or experience, and why should all women be judged by her, especially women, of whom there are more than a few, to judge by the ratings, who prefer their news from someone else, who happens to be male, at least – but here’s the kicker.

It doesn’t matter.

Not when the bottom line is: we just aren’t ready for a woman. Then she’s just one of us. Whether she or we asked for it. And failing because of it.

SNIP

Why do more people watch NBC than CBS?

SNIP

Which raises the even more difficult question. Knowing what she’s up against, knowing that we’re being judged, whether we like it or not, what’s a woman to do?

Watch Katie?

Support Hillary?

Knowing what’s at stake, not just for her but for us, knowing her failure becomes our failure whether we like it or want it or not (America just wasn’t ready, and if America wasn’t ready, why should your workplace/family/community be),

Does that give you an interest in her success as well?

SNIP

But you won’t be able to say that about Hillary.

Once she takes her first stumble, makes her first mistake, one bump in the polls, and the first guy comes out and says – there it is: America wasn’t ready....

Katie may stumble, but she doesn't have big ears

No, it doesn't. Two completely different things. Winning viewers is different from winning elections - you can't sabotage opponents much in television competition, it's more based on your own performance. Not so for politics and winning elections.

People shouldn't vote against someone because of their gender, but shouldn't vote for them for that reason either.

Hillary has plenty of negatives that (I hope) will keep her from office!

With Katie and Hillary, it has less to do with their gender and more to do with substance, likability, their general appeal to the masses. If someone like Margaret Thatcher came along, who could question her ability to lead? But Hillary is no Lady Thatcher. And Katie...well she's not even a Diane Sawyer!

Ummmm, Suze, we recognize the "victim card" when we see it, and it's gotten old and boring! Were I in a position to have hired you and didn't, it wouldn't be because you're a woman, it would be because I think you stink as a news-whatever-it-is-you-are. Same with the perky one, she's fluff, marketed as the next best thing, and guess what? She isn't. That she is female to me is secondary.

In Susan's world, anyone with a uterus should be supporting Katie and supporting Hillary. How could one not? As far as Katie's concerned, she's in way over her head. I don't blame her - I'd have taken the $15M and run with it too! But garbage is garbage whether its men or women who are choosing not to watch (how to explain the success of THE VIEW is another question). Hillary's in way over her head too although she would never admit it and feels the presidency is rightfully hers. Unfortunately she has to tolerate that nasty business of a campaign and actually courting voters. Why if they had any sense they would simply have a coronation for her. And it's not that people either aren't ready for a woman in that position or think a woman is not up to the job, it's that neither of these two women are right for the respective positions.

It has nothing to do with gender. I don't watch Katie because I don't like Katie and the bias she brings to the news. And I will never vote for anyone JUST because they are a woman. Anyone who does is an idiot.

KAties ratings are fair.

The upcoming Presidential election will not be. Given what we know about the clinton political machine, we can expect massive fraud, and another President Clinton.

Hey, Susan, if you're going to base your ideology (and blame individual failures) on GENDER identity, why don't you go ahead and do the same with RACE. After all the logic is identical. Therefore you, Susan, as a Caucasian, should identify with White People, just as you identify with women. I believe David Duke has an organization you can join. (I hope the sarcasm is obvious.)

Not ready for a woman anchor? What drugs are these people on? CBS was number three when Rather was the anchor. The reason CBS is in the toilet is because it is a liberal crackhouse.

Rather than considering that CBS is failing because of its incompetence and political bias, the lefties are giving us the "the country is sexist" garbage.

In other words, they're not screw-ups, they're poor victims. Boo-hoo.

Hillary sucks.

Don't blame it on sexism.

God, susan estrogen is dumb! Katie is failing because she's an idiot, not because she's a woman.` Susan reminds me of jesse jackson and the other black race-baiters who blame whites for the failure of any and every black person.

Gee, Ms. Estrich, I have a uterus too, but I wasn't aware that the stress of toting one of 'em around all day was enough to render all my other major organs completely incapacitated.

So here's an idea, Sooz, howsabout we let our uteruses make all the important decisions in the L&D room, and let our brains do the honors in the voting booth?

As for deciding what TV network to watch at the newshour, well, maybe that is one human endeavor that truly is indeed best left to the menfolk to take care of: ya gotta figure that God wouldn't have created man with that little black plastic thingamadoodle permanantly stuck to his hand unless he intended for them to be the ones to use it, right?
