"So I pay $2.00 for a big mac..."

That little piece of meat on a big mac would probably only go up 5-6 cents-10 cents at the most if they had to pay higher wages.

+ more money would be going into SS that these illegals currently are not paying.

"Consumers and the industry itself may be feeling the repercussions in a shortage of meatpackers, higher wage costs and, ultimately, higher prices for the beef that lands on America's tables at home and in restaurants."

Consumers will also feel tax relief when illegals are sent packing (home) and stop overflowing schools, hospitals and prisons. It's nice how all things equal out in the end. :)

I seriously doubt they were being paid with no deductions.

If nearly 1300 employees were arrested shouldn't management be going to jail also. I'm a business owner and find it hard to believe that you could have 1300 illegals working for you and not suspect anything!

I quit buying ANYTHING from TYSON a long time ago...

Same here....somewhere around 16 years ago I started my "boycott" of Tyson Foods.

And it may not have an effect on prices.

AP sucks.

This raid was not so much about them being illegals but the crackdown on false and fraudulant paperwork rings/networks.

Lot's of employers like this do not pay into SS when using illegals. Who is going to rat them out?

This is always the threat that prices will go up. So what. Americans need good paying jobs. Illegals don't do work that Americans won't do, they take jobs at wages so low that Americans can't make a living doing them.
Kick the illegals out and make the agriculture industry pay a living wage to American workers.
Yes, prices will go up but we will be supporting Americans and not Mexicans. Aren't we supposed to be taking care of our own???

There is a limit to the argument that higher wages will attract American workers. In a full employment economy there may not be any American workers available, especially in these little cities. I remember needing a secretary in Omaha when the local unemployment rate was 2%. No matter how I advertised, I got zero applicants for many months.

I buy mine direct from the farmer and suggest that those who can, do the same.

I used to raise hogs, about 15,000 market animals a year.

Occasionally I would butcher an animal, but mostly I bought my pork from the store, it was cheaper, easier!

Are we sure these are even their names, not aliases?

"make the agriculture industry pay a living wage to American workers"

Isn't that what the minimum wage is supposed to do? And 'living wage' is like Silly Putty. It takes up an impression from whoever used it last. No thanks.

When hordes of police and immigration officials stormed meatpacking plants in six states this week, the illegal workers arrested may not have been the only victims.

If beef goes higher, fish becomes a good substitute. Little waste on fish.

BINGO! And the minimum wage increase will only encourage employers to hire illegal immigrant labor.

The packers will begin pouting and will raise the wholesale prices to the stores to punish you for interfering with their comfy little system.
