Mt. Hood is such a dangerous mountain...very unpredictable. My thoughts and prayers are with the families.

Out of curiousity, why would someone chose this time of year to try and climb Mt. Hood? Instead of, say, the middle of summer?

I am sure that phone call, is in retrospect, such a blessing for which Kelly's family can be so thankful. I think that in situations such as this, it is an encouragement for a family to find small things for which they can be thankful, even in the darkest of times.
That call was such a gift.

Does anyone know how much food and propane these three took with them?

They gambled and they lost. It's very sad.
I can't help but notice that they not only risked their lives, but they risked the happiness and futures of the people who cared about them.
The mother of the Brooklyn lawyer has clearly lost her sanity due to her grief - some of the quotes from her in the paper should not have been printed, it's not fair to quote someone whose mind has snapped.

It's been a deadly fall on the Pacific Coast due to all that "global warming" we've had since October.

I just found out that this guy went to my high school.
I think I may have even known him. I wish I could find a picture of him from high school to see if it is who I am thinking about.
It's very sad.

Sorry to hear of the loss of a climber, but climbing in terrible weather is near suicide. Having been caught in unexpected blizzards while hiking in the mountians, I resolved never to even be above 2000 feet again in the wintertime.

I watched (on FOXNEWS) the news conference where the Sheriff who is in charge of the rescue briefed the press. I have to say that if I were up on that mountain this is the man I would want to be in charge if it came to the point I needed to be rescued!

I'm gonna add my two cents worth regarding Mr Kim (found dead last week near Grants Pass OR) and the current search underway on Mount Hood;
It seems like more and more people are relying on cell phones to get themselves out of emergencies.
News: usually cell phones do not work very well out in the woods.(Mr. Kims cell call was picked up at a cell site in Roseburg Oregon, a good 60 miles from his actual location)
If any of these lost people had a real commercial 2-way radio or Amateur (ham radio), the odds are that their pleas for help would be received and the transmitters could be easily tracked down.

Help! Some of us live nowhere near mountains and have a problem visualizing mountain searches. Could someone explain to us (or is it just me?) how big Mount Hood is? For example, at the tree line (what altitude is that?) what is the approximate circumference or diameter of the mountain?

I can't help but wonder what those folks in New York are thinking as they have watched the coverage over several days of this search. If my memory serves me correctly, they themselves had to hire a helicopter to find their parents dead after many days just off the highway. The parents were not on a risky adventure driving to New York.
