The 9th inning Vin Scully call of the Koufax 1965 perfect game is out there and easily can be had on the internet. However, the author Jane Leavy found a tape recording of the entire Scully game call, complete except for maybe the first 1 1/2innings.

Her book explains that in 1965, it was not routine to save recordings of games, but that Scully, as a favor to a pitcher who was throwing a no-hitter, would ask the engineer to record the last inning or so of a possible no -hitter to give as a gift to the pitcher. That is why the last inning as recorded. The Dodgers used to sell a 45 rpm phonograph record of that call (but I could not afford to buy one on my meager allowance as a kid).

What Jane Leavy found is a tape recording almost accidentally made by somebody who happens to be an authority in baseball statistics analysis, for his son. The son had to go on a date that night and missed listening to the game, so his father taped it for him. The tape was found in their house a few years ago and appears to be the only extant copy of the entire game call. All this is explained in Jane Leavy's book.

I called Leavy a few years ago to see about getting copy, and she said they were trying to work a deal with the publisher, the Dodgers and the other relevant parties to include the recording with the paperback version of the biography. Apparently they were not able to do that. Maybe legal problems?

I would love to hear the entire game again! As others have pointed out, Scully's call is simply poetry--just perfect...
