Senator John F. Kerry said Wednesday that President Bashar Assad of Syria expressed a willingness to work with the United States to bring stability to Iraq, and said Assad personally offered assistance that Kerry plans to convey to the Bush administration.
Kerry -- who visited Syria along with Senator Christopher J. Dodd, Democrat of Connecticut, despite the administration's opposition to the trip -- said the meeting with Assad reinforced the need to follow the Iraq Study Group's recommendation that the US government directly engage Syria and Iran to find a way forward in Iraq.
"He offered some very direct and concrete ways in which they could be helpful in Iraq," Kerry said in an interview conducted by telephone from Damascus. "I came away with a distinct feeling that there are opportunities here. There are fronts in which we can work together if people are inclined to."
The Massachusetts Democrat said he would not publicly discuss the substance of his talks with Assad until he has fully briefed State Department officials about his visit.
But Kerry reiterated his position that President Bush is wrong to rule out direct talks with Syria and Iran. He added that he is interested in visiting Iran as well at an "appropriate time" that's well-removed from the country's recent conference for Holocaust deniers, which Kerry labeled "absurd and insulting."
State Department officials sought to dissuade Kerry, Dodd, and Nelson from going to Syria, though they helped set up logistics of the visits when the lawmakers insisted on making their trips.
Last week, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow blasted the visits as "not appropriate," saying that such meetings hand the Syrian government "a PR victory" by allowing officials to showcase what they portray as improved relations with the West.

Sounds something like Satan volunteering to assist Jesus in redeeming lost souls.
Go home Kerry, curl up into a embryonic position, and have Teresa bring you a family size bottle of Heinz extra strength Ketchsup with a nipple on it. Suck on it and contemplate upon how everything you think, say or do sucks!

There is nothing or no one as arrogant and pompous as a United States Senator, John Kerry and Christopher Dodd being the two prime examples. Just as they visited and bestowed validation upon Daniel Ortega in the 1980s, undermining President Reagan, they're running the same act again. But this is TREASON as we are now actively engaged in a war, and it is common knowledge that Syria is supplying arms and personnel to go into Iraq and kill our men! BASTARDS!

Very Syria-specific point here, if you have ever seen the Syrian ambassador to the US, he is one of the absolutely best most sincere intelligent liars any dictatorship puts out there. They have a hereditary thug dictatorship, and when asked about it this guy somehow makes you think they have or will soon have a model democracy.
And then add in the fact Kerry is a leftwing fool.

Well put -- our socialist liberals are weak morons, as they continue to demonstrate. Peace at any price, with capitulation, pandering, surrender, you name it.

If we had an Administration and Justice Department with any balls at all, John F'in Kerry would be cuffed upon his arrival back on U.S. soil and charged with violating the Logan Act, prosecuted, convicted and thrown into a nice cramped little prison cell to think over his life of treason against the United States.

Assad of Syria promised Colin Powell that he would help stabilize Iraq in 2003. Of course he did no such thing.
Kerry knows that Assad did not keep his word in 2003.. He just hopes no one in the USA remembers what Assad said and did 3 years ago.
To: meg88
Once again Kerry is undermining U.S. policy and strategy for personal gain. What a jerk this traitor is.
