As of Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at least 2,997 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes seven military civilians. At least 2,397 died as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers.
The AP count is 14 higher than the Defense Department's tally, last updated Friday at 10 a.m. EST.

Three more and the Commie crowd down at the DNC's Ass. Press will be popping corks.
About time for the A.P. to send an intern down to the party store for balloons and funny hats.
If they want three more, they can count the soldiers killed here at home in training exercises or how about those killed in Afghanistan.
You mean we finally surpassed the 2973 fatalities from that 4 hr pd on 9/11?
Cindy Sheehan must be having a hot flash.......
You're forgetting, the war in Afghanistan, is the good war.
The MSM can't even wait for the big round number to begin the orgasm they've been waiting for. I didn't think I could hate them any more. I was wrong.
That is almost as many as we lost the first day of WWII at Pearl Harbor and Manilla.
Americans now want easy victories. Any thing less means we must run home and hide under the bed.
They are truly the scum at the bottom of the barrel in this country.
Let them whine- while 3000 or so dead is no small thing- it is still darn good for what? 5 years of war now? That is just testament to how highly trained our military is to have had so little killed in that long period of time http://sacredscoop.com
Democratic president Truman sent them there to handle a "police action" against "bandits."
Many (most?) liberals are insufferably egregious. They really, really do feeeeeeeeeeeel that U.S. military misfortunes are worth the lives of other Americans' sons and daughters:
In a letter to the editor of the San Francisco Chronicle, one [redacted] of Mill Valley, Calif., says that some things are worth the lives of other people's sons and daughters:
"The constant loss of U.S. soldiers in Iraq--after the war is "won"--is a tragedy. However, if this is what it takes to retire the Bush administration at the next election, the sacrifice is justified."

Then, among many others, there's Rat stalwart (emphasis on the wart), Ellen Ratner (emphasis on the Rat):
"ELLEN RATNER SAYS SHE HOPES WAR IN IRAQ GOES BADLY FOR U.S."

I didn't think I would ever see an ACCURATE report of the KIA's. The MSM always uses the LARGER number that includes natural and other non combat deaths.
I can only surmise the KIA number is now "HIGH" enough for them to report the distinction......once in awhile.
There have been 194 US KIA's in Afghanistan with 65 this year.
The countdown to 3000 has been happening for a year now but they couldn't skip 2997 and let the Saddam Execution take the whole run of the night.
