:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Fighting Jihad: Strategic Thinking Needed
-Full Story-

The United States of America has some of the smartest leaders in government, military, and business in the world. Yet the American government has failed to collectively use this formidable brain-power 5+ years after the attack by Jihadists on the American homeland to develop a truly strategic plan to fight the global threat of Jihad and Islamist extremism. In one of the most complex wars in American history, rather than starting with holistic, big-picture thinking towards the challenges and prioritizing resources and actions accordingly, America has spent much of the past five years after 9/11 in reactive and bureaucratic churning.

UPDATE (3:02)

http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30000-1249593,00.html

"Kidnap And Beheading Plot"
Updated: 10:55, Wednesday January 31, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The eight people arrested by terror police in Birmingham were allegedly planning an Iraq-style kidnapping and beheading, Sky News has learned.

Sky's Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt says they intended to post a video of the hostage being tortured and killed on the internet.

Their target was an unidentified man in his twenties who is now under police protection.

Brunt says he was picked out because of his job. It is not yet known what this was.

The suspects were detained under the Terrorism Act after a six-month surveillance operation involving officers from two forces.

More details will be given at a police briefing at 11.30am, followed by a press conference at 3pm. You can watch it live on Sky News online.

Sealed off road
Brunt said officers feared the alleged plot was "coming to fruition".

The fact it "would not have resulted in a mass casualties" suggested a "chilling new departure" in terror tactics.

The suspects had been tracked in a combined police operation led by the Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit.

They were supported by officers from the West Midlands police and the Metropolitan Police.

Officers swooped on a number of addresses in the Sparkhill and Alum Rock areas of east Birmingham at 4am."

"Two explosions in northern Bangkok"

(BangkokPost.com)

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Two explosions occurred early on Tuesday morning along the main road in northern Bangkok. There were no casualties reported in the blasts near the Daily News newspaper and Rama Gardens Hotel Bangkok.

The blasts are suspected to be grenades, probably fired from a military-type grenade launcher from the Don Muang Tollway, which runs above the Viphavadee Rangsit road, where the explosions occurred.

One went off around 1 a.m. just in front of the Daily News newspaper building, which is about 200 metres back from the main roadway. It blew a hole about 30 cm (one foot) wide in the ground.

The second blast, not long after, occurred about 30 metres from the first, in the parking lot of the Rama Gardens Hotel. It blew out most of the lights in the parking area, and caused a foot-wide crack in a wall.

At both scenes, police found explosive debris, which they were analysing this morning. Officers and bomb squad members said they believed the explosives were "projectile devices fired from a launcher on the Tollway.""

"CARE Regional Director and two US Aid Workers Killed in Nairobi"

By Dan Wooding
Founder of ASSIST Ministries

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "NAIROBI, KENYA (ANS) -- Geoffrey Chege, 57, the regional director of the aid agency, CARE International, for East and Central Africa, was shot dead on Saturday night, the 27th January, in an upscale suburb of Nairobi during a carjacking attempt.

He was returning from a prayer meeting with his wife, who was not hurt.

According to SVM News Service (http://salemvoice.org/news131.html ) Chege was directing CARE USA's programs in East and Central Africa as a 25-year veteran of CARE.

On the same Saturday, another two US women and an employee of an international aid organization were also shot dead in a village just a few miles outside the capital city of Nairobi.

“One of the murdered women is Lois Anderson, a former Presbyterian Church (USA) Missionary in Africa and another is her daughter Zelda White,” said the story.

“Zelda White lived with her husband in Kenya, and the Andersons had traveled to the east Africa nation from their South Carolina home for a family gathering.

According to the police, the suspected killers of the US women, who were traveling in a car with diplomatic license plates, were shot dead by police later. On Saturday around 20 km west of Nairobi, these two US women were stopped by carjackers bearing rifles.

“At least one woman was shot because she took too long to leave the car. Five people were traveling in the vehicle, which was then towed to the US embassy”, Police authorities told the SVM News Service.

Doug Welch, the PC (USA)'s area coordinator for Africa said, “The Andersons served as PC (USA) missionaries for more than four decades in Sudan and Kenya. They are known across east Africa for their decades of service to the church, especially in the area of theological education.”

The US embassy has declined to comment on the incident."

"Police killed in Sri Lanka blast"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "At least six policemen and a civilian have been killed by a roadside bomb in eastern Sri Lanka, the authorities say.
Another 12 officers who were on the bus taking them on leave were hurt in the explosion, which happened close to a university in Batticaloa district.

The Defence Ministry blamed Tamil Tiger rebels for the blast. Violence has risen in Sri Lanka in recent months as the country has slid back towards war, despite a 2002 ceasefire still in place."

An intruder broke into the Highgrove estate last night and was arrested in the gardens area on suspicion of trespass.

The 55-year-old was later released on bail, a Gloucestershire police spokeswoman confirmed.

"He was detained within the grounds and did not gain access to any buildings," the spokeswoman added.

Not much information in that article, LOL.

Was the man a victim of the car bomb or planting one?

Boston

Bomb squad detonates 'suspicious package' that closed I-93 north

A bomb squad used a small explosive to detonate a suspicious package in Charlestown that forced the shutdown of northbound Interstate 93 and closed the Sullivan Square T station. (snip)

Witnesses described a package with wires and tubes protruding out of it, Pesaturo said. He said the package was on a support structure underneath the interstate some 12 to 15 feet above the bus way.....

My hubby would like for me to have a "self-imposed news blackout". He thinks it's bad to watch it all day long. He says it keeps me stirred up! You know. . . he may be right!

Thanks for the ping, Cindy.

It must be terribly frustrating for D.S. I admire her efforts. I can't help but to wonder what would have happened if she agreed to have lunch with Lula.

Thank you Ooooo....just one of those things that piqued my curiosity. While thinking about it yesterday, it also occured to my overworked brain that the leak, combined with whatever ignited the gas, plus this happening at a "gas station" was what make it such a large blast (at least it looked that way in the photo's).

And just having my outdoor grill as an idea about propane and any odor...I couldn't recall if it did or not.
