:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Fighting Jihad: Strategic Thinking Needed
-Full Story-

The United States of America has some of the smartest leaders in government, military, and business in the world. Yet the American government has failed to collectively use this formidable brain-power 5+ years after the attack by Jihadists on the American homeland to develop a truly strategic plan to fight the global threat of Jihad and Islamist extremism. In one of the most complex wars in American history, rather than starting with holistic, big-picture thinking towards the challenges and prioritizing resources and actions accordingly, America has spent much of the past five years after 9/11 in reactive and bureaucratic churning.

Security breach snarls B.C. airport
Friday, Jan. 5. 2007

VANCOUVER (CP) - A security breach at Vancouver International Airport has prompted officials to hold departing flights, resulting in a backlog of about 3,000 passengers and at least 10 flights.

Airport spokesman Ralph Eastman says the airport was notified by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority of a potential security breach involving a passenger. As a precaution, all departing international flights were held but Eastman says domestic and incoming flights were not affected.

The incident began at 11:20 a.m. PST. The airport then decided to remove all the passengers waiting for international flights from the terminal and re-screen them all.

The incident occurred during the busiest time of the day for international flights - between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Thanks, Oorang.

Have you seen any follow up regarding the trucker stopped east of Sioux Falls? Nothing in the local papers.

"Luggage Stolen from Toronto Airport"

CTV Television
LLOYD

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "BALFOUR: It's the third time in as many years police have broken up a theft ring at the Toronto airport. Arrests included workers in cargo and shipping, goods involved worth millions of dollars. And Toronto is not alone. Baggage handlers in Houston, Texas, didn't just rifle through luggage, they stole the whole suitcase, 68 of them. And at New York?s JFK, handlers were caught on tape stealing $30,000 planted in a suitcase they opened. This former airport security worker says though employees are subject to background and random security checks, it's not enough.

WILLIAM BUTLER (Former Airport Screener): When they leave, they're free to go. They're not screened at all. You just up and leave at the end of your shift.

BALFOUR: Others raise a more ominous question. If it's so easy to remove items unnoticed, how simple is it to put something inside. Denelle Balfour, CTV News, Toronto."

Report: Japan to permit US attacks from its territory

Asahi Shimbun newspaper says countries agree on military cooperation in case of armed conflict on Korean Peninsula, missile attack on Japan or launching of operation to protect Taiwan from China

Iris Georlette
Published: 01.06.07, 19:30

TOKYO - The Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported that the United States and Japan are expected to upgrade their joint operation plan for a possible contingency on the Korean Peninsula.

The Japanese newspaper said the countries agreed on military cooperation in case of an armed conflict on the Korean Peninsula, a missile attack on Japan or the launching of an operation to protect Taiwan from China.

The Asahi Shimbun quoted local government officials as saying that under the new agreement the US would be authorized to launch attacks on North Korea from bases and ports in Japan.

In addition, the report said, Japanese and US officials will seek the cooperation of the police, local governments and the private sector in such functions as search and rescue operations for US military personnel, and providing and guarding bases and ports that would serve as operational hubs for the US military.

Some 50,000 American troops are regularly stationed in Japan as part of the existing alliance between the countries. The current plan is aimed at providing an answer to the threats made by North Korean, which carried out nuclear and long-range missile tests in 2006.

Talks scheduled for next month

A senior Japanese defense official confirmed that the two countries are examining “reactions to possible scenarios in the area,” and admitted that the North Korean nuclear threat and the tensions between China and Taiwan are “two key points” that raise Japan’s concerns.

According to the Kyodo news agency, during talks scheduled for next month Japan and the US are expected to discuss logistical aid to American troops in case of and armed conflict between Beijing and Taipei.

The reports of increased cooperation between Japan and the US come amid Tokyo’s efforts to raise its political and military profile overseas. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has vowed to alter the pacifistic Japanese constitution to allow more freedom to operate militarily overseas.

Nuclear plant target for stolen rocket launchers, police allege (Australia)

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1763531/posts

STOLEN Australian Army rocket launchers are in the hands of a home-grown terrorist group which planned to use them to attack Sydney's Lucas Heights nuclear reactor, police allege.

The Federal Police Commissioner, Mick Keelty, said a man arrested in Leumeah yesterday and charged with possessing stolen weapons was linked to a group that had planned to attack buildings in Sydney, including the reactor.

"Iran can still be stopped"

Webmaster Date published: 18/12/2006

By Benjamin Netanyahu
December 14, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "On his recent visit to Washington Mr. Olmert rightfully announced that Israel could not accept nuclear weapons in Iran. Yet his actions do not live up to his words. In reality, the current Israeli government lacks direction and leadership. While Iran tenaciously and steadily moves forward with its nuclear program, the Israeli government is preoccupied with creating “agendas” for the media (e.g., the initiative for changing the election system) or with announcing superfluous and dangerous plans, such as Mr. Olmert´s recently announced plan to give up more territory to the Palestinians that will only be used later as launching sites for more Iranian missiles.

It is time for the prime minister of Israel to put the task of ensuring our survival above all else. If he does, I can guarantee him that my colleagues and I will provide him with unwavering support in confronting the Iranian threat, just as we did during the war in Lebanon this past summer. But if Mr. Olmert fails to rise to the task, he must step down immediately and clear the way for a leadership that will ensure our survival and our future."
