Putting things into perspective

Thought for the day...

If you consider that there has been an average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq theatre of operations during the last 22 months, and a total of 2,112 deaths, that gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000 soldiers.

The firearm death rate in Washington D.C. is 80.6 per 100,000 for the same period. That means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in the U.S. Capitol, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation, than you are in Iraq.

Conclusion: The U.S. should pull out of Washington

------
Actually, the U.S. did pull out of Washington a long time ago -- hard to really say what country they are working for these days...certainly not the American citizen.

Yes, Washington, DC, is more dangerous than the Iraq battlefield. Something the libs and MSM will ignore, esecially given all their voters in Washington, DC....standard operating procedure.

Also, some of the 2,112 deaths were accidental - not combat-related.

True Story

I have a friend who took the subway into Washington. He was robbed at gunpoint a half block away from the subway exit, it was about 7pm. He called the police who took his info., and said that they likley would never catch the mugger.

Then he thought because he still had 1/2 of his money, he should go out and have a pizza.

Before he left for Pizza he got a call from a queer who had been looking in through his hotel room window with a pair of binoculars from an adjacent building, wanting to hook up.

He hung up the phone and went to the nearest pizza place from his hotel, and had a small Pizza.

He was robbed again at gunpoint on his way back to his hotel. It was about 9pm. He called the police, who took his info. over the phone. He was informed again that they would not likley be able to apprehend the perp.Pennyless, he had to call friends for help, and immediately cancelled his credit card.

During this entire time, he never met even one police officer face to face.Great place to be without a gun. In fact people should be walking in pairs and carrying in Washington. This happened during the Clinton years.

He has never been back to Washington since, and vows he will never enter the city again.

DC is NOT my favorite place to go.

Every now and again I get called up to the 5 sided puzzle palace to sit in on this or that brief and I absolutely hate it.

I do not think that we lost 2,112 troops in the last 22 months it is more like 1600 troops. But to your point the war in Iraq has by far the lowest number of US casualties compared to other wars with the same length of time. We are sad for every fallen hero from our brave troops however this extremely low number of casualties is astonishing and great indicator of the incredible might and professionalism of the US military.

Yes, that 2,112 figure is total fatalities to include accidents, and yes, any casualty is a saddening event. Yo are absolutely correct in your statement:

"..this extremely low number of casualties is astonishing and great indicator of the incredible might and professionalism of the US military."

I would go so far as to say unprecedented in warfare.

Except in the case of the French.

not a big fan of this argument - isn't this apples and oranges? Our troops aren't dying from firearms, they're dying from suicide or roadside bombs.

but if we want to just compare casualties from firearms, then we should look at Iraqi civilian deaths and iraqi police deaths as well. i don't know of any reliable stats for those but I assume they're fairly high too (more than DC).

there are plenty of good reasons for us to stay in Iraq, I don't think we need to use examples like this to prove our point.

I wonder what happens when you make a fair, honest comparison, such as D.C. vs Baghdad, or Fallujah, or Mosul, or a few other major cities where most of our troops strength is concentrated? Or if you put those 160,000 troops in D.C., then what's the murder rate there? Talk about skewing data to make a point.

yea, but the DC murder rate is for civilians, not soldiers. there aren't 80.6 per 100,000 soldiers being killed in Washington DC. (maybe not since the war of 1812)

you have to compare the right stats to make a valid argument.
