AUSTRALIA has won the fifth Test in Sydney by 10 wickets after crushing England today, completing the first Ashes series whitewash in 86 years.
The win closes the careers of Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne and Justin Langer.
Set 46 to win, Langer and Matthew Hayden reached the total without fuss.
Langer finished not out 20 and Hayden, who smashed a six to level the scores and then hit the winning run, was unbeaten on 23.
The two players spent several moments hugging delighted teammates, who walked on to the ground after the match was won.
England's team walked over to its loyal Barmy Army supporters.
The retiring trio made a special effort to thank fans, and Langer was overcome by the emotion of the occasion.
Several players also hugged John Buchanan, who has coached his final Test after over seven years in the job.
Australian fast bowler Stuart Clark, who took five wickets for the game, was named the man of the match, while Ponting was named player of the series after scoring a total of 576 runs

That, of course, should read "2007".
That's the second time I've done that this week...
Oh Gosh. Now how many yanks ould know about Cricket?
Query:
Poms - From Pomeranian, or Pomegrenate?
Education is a life-long experience... :-)
Poms - From "Pommy Bastards", "Whinging Poms", etc.
The Poms were flogged like red-headed step children/rented mules/etc...
Looking forward to the one day series.
(grits teeth)
Well done on Australia's victory. First class players :0)
Cricket ping
And Australia has humiliated the "spineless wonders" many a time in the last 20 years...LOL.
Cricket Ping!
If you want to be added or dropped from the Cricket Ping List, let me know.
And this Yankee knows plenty about the great sport of cricket.
It seemed that this test was really only worth watching for the milestones and the sendoffs for many old greats, and in the case of Warne, the greatest. Ashes back to Australia, Warne's 700th wicket, Warne's last try at a test century, seeing Panesar bowl to the Aussies....don't get me wrong, the finish at Adelaide was terrific, but the other matches were pretty much ho-hum, meaning, sometime on Day 3-5 with England about 5 wickets down in their second innings, you pretty much knew that the match was in the bag for Australia.
Well done to Warney - his critics and he himself have done their level best to derail his career but his unmatched talents have seen him through.
As the papers are saying, 2006 has been an absolutely horrid year for England's sporting teams.
Too bloody right!
LOL.
Normally I like the Aussie team........if they are not playing against India. Does Warney still gets the "nightmares"?
Flintoff made a terrible mistake declaring in the Second Test. He should have kept batting even if England had run up 1000 runs. The longer England batted, the longer McGrath and Warne would have had to stay out in that heat. Instead, England folded in the second innings and became the first team to declare with 550 in the first innings and lose.
Of course, batting longer would have only resulted in a draw, since England had no clue how to take wickets.
Yes, but a draw wouldn't have hurt England as they were only down 1-0 at that point. Going down 2-0 with three tests to play was a killer.
Please add me to the ping list.
Thanks.
