"Wrong place at the wrong time."
Who knew the wrong place to be on New Year's Eve was at a party welcoming in the new year? Who knew the wrong time to be murdered was now when people are so callous about death that it's almost as if we're asking the victim, "Just what did you do to get yourself murdered?"
There are many words to describe the senseless killing of Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams. Unfortunate. Heartbreaking. Sad. But here's the one word we can't use in describing such a death: Unexpected.

Nothing will change because it's all about the bling.
Just another statistic. The black community needs to wake up and stop the victim mentality and get a reality check that they are killing themselves and can't blame whitey.
Good article, cuts right to the heart of the matter.
And why is it more of a tragedy because the victim was rich and famoous? Black people kill black people all the time and no one ever seems to care; until now.
I wasn't aware that Williams was a gang member and it doesn't state so in the article.
Do you have a source?
What gang banger was killed?
Your an idiot!
*************
That would be you're an idiot, Einstein.
In his article this week, TMQ (aka Gregg Easterbrook) made the statement that most people have no good reason to be outside their homes after midnight. He says:
"Darrent Williams, 1982-2007: Once at a Bill Cosby concert I heard Cosby say, "Nothing good has ever happened between midnight and dawn." He meant this seriously, and proceeded to talk about why it was foolish for anyone except cops and hospital personnel to be anywhere but home during those hours. According to initial reports -- bearing in mind that initial reports from the scenes of tragedies are often wrong -- Williams was murdered leaving a nightclub about 2 a.m., the morning following the Broncos' final game of the season. Yes, it was New Year's, and many people are out to all hours that morning. But should they be?
"I am a big believer in the power of statistics to help us lead our lives. Statistics cannot tell us what will happen, but can suggest a great deal about what is likely to happen. Statistics tell us we should not fear airline flights but should be very wary about crossing the street. (There were 4,881 pedestrians deaths in the United States in 2005, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.) Statistics tell us we shouldn't worry about drinking tap water but should be cautious about corn syrup in foods. And statistics tell us we are far more likely to be victims of violent crime, or involved in automobile accidents, after midnight than before midnight. The sorts of people who are out on the streets in the wee hours, or driving on the roads then, are the sorts of people whom the wise avoid. It's not enough to mourn the loss of Darrent Williams. Learn the lesson: When the clock strikes midnight, you belong at home."
Though I might quibble a bit with some of his statement, I think, overall, he's right. Had Williams been fast asleep in his bed, where he belonged, he would be alive today.
But it passes spell check./s Never claimed to be perfect.
You are correct. I was just upset and didn't check what I typed. I live in the Denver Metro area and no one has even insinuated that Williams is a gang banger. All reports are the athletes at this party were well behaved and had no incidents. It appears a friend of one of the athletes exchanged words (angry) with the person that many suspect shot Williams. The gangbangers were thrown out of the club. They waited for the limo to leave and shot it. Heck it could have been up to a half dozen athletes dead if they had all rode together.
I'm not even a Bronco fan. People automatically judge the actions of others, Williams, without knowing the details.
Its sad in that the player shot did nothing but ride in a limo. Wrong place, wrong time.
Wonder if Denver will now admit they have a gang problem. I doubt it.

Then you're in good company. I apologize.
Btw, I hate the Broncos.
The really sad thing is that this black columnist states only a tiny portion of the glaring truth and elicits so much praise for so doing. Soft bigotry of low expectations redux.
The bottom line is that many successful blacks want to act like thugs and hang around with thugs yet want to be left alone and respected themselves. It just doesn't work like that. When I was young and I found myself at the scene of some wrongdoing it was not an acceptable excuse to my parents that I myself was innocent and was merely present. They would simply say "You knew who was there and what might happen, you should not have been there." They were right.
I have a new idea for a campaign among black people. Instead of "Stop Snitching" and other evil nonsense, someone should sell shirts that simply say "Act White." I will be condemned for saying it, but this is the unavoidable truth. You act like Zimbabweans, you wind up living like Zimbabweans. If you want to live like the Swiss, you gotta act Swiss. Ain't no two ways about this one, homes. Word!
