Several blocks of Congress Ave are closed as police investigate the death of dozens and dozens of birds lying in the street.
KLBJ spoke to the APD's Toni Shovenitz, She says they are speculating it is some type of posioning.
Right now police are using leaf-blowers to clean the road. They hope re-open this area before rush hour traffic.
From what I understand of bird feathers and that crap they hold, that's polluting.
Never lived in a downtown? Grackles and pigeons are screaming, flying rats. Very easy to see how a resident would want to poison these vastly overpopulated PESTS.
Was it foggy there this morning? If flying into a fog,and they can't see ducks and geese will fold in their wings and fall to the ground.
WABC in New York is reporting some kind of gas smell in the City....no news yet....
The birds could have been showing signs but no on would likely have noticed. It would be strange, though, for a disease to to a mass killing. You'd think that they'd be finding them scattered around and for many days; not all at once and in one location.

I was parallel parking one time in downtown Pittsburgh and I heard a "pop" by the drivers front wheel as I was parking. I had flattened a pigeon. You would think the bird would have had the brains to get out of the way of a slow moving car.
Nope, today is a clear day in Austin. Loews were around freezing as is was a clear night with it supposed to be sunny and highs in the 60's.
I am at work at the Capitol right north of this area and you'd never know of anything going on except for the news reports. Of course, I commute from the north side.
Legislative session begins tommorrow, and as someone mentioned, the innauguration is coming.

Heart of downtown Austin closed in wake of mysterious bird killAUSTIN, Texas Austin police have a troubling mystery on their hands.They've closed off most of Congress Avenue for the morning downtown -- along with all side streets between Colorado and Brazos streets. That's after dozens of birds were found dead in the area.
The several dozen dead birds were found along Congress between Sixth and Eighth streets overnight. Congress Avenue is closed from Cesar Chavez on the south to Eleventh Street on the north in front of the Capitol. A police spokeswoman says the area is expected to remain closed until about noon.
People who work in the closed-off area have been advised to delay coming to work until after fire crews conduct precautionary testing of the area and declare an all-clear.
