Far-right group formed in European Parliament 09.01.2007 - 17:35 CET | By Honor Mahony EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Far-right MEPs have managed to club together in the European Parliament, getting enough members to form a political group entitling them to EU funds.

The group was created on Tuesday (9 January) and managed to get just the threshold number of deputies needed under EU rules - 20 MEPs from six different member states.

The diverse group which houses politicians from Romania's anti-Roma xenophobic Greater Romania Party, through to France's and Belgium's anti-immigrant National Front and Vlaams Belang.

The group also includes Andrew Mölzner (an Austrian MEP kicked out of a far-right party in Austria for being too extremist)), Dimitar Stoyanov (a Bulgarian MEP who caused a ruckus in the parliament last year when he circulated a derogatory email about Roma people) and two Italian MEPs Luca Romagnoli and Alessandra Mussolini (granddaughter of Benito).

The group is to be headed by Bruno Gollnisch, a member of the National Front, and is to be called "Identity, Tradition and Sovereignty."

Having hammered out a political charter upon which they can agree - broadly anti-immigration, anti-EU constitution and anti-Turkish EU membership - the text will now be sent to European Parliament president Josep Borell.

One of Mr Borrell's last duties - he is due to step down next week – is likely to be to formally announce the formation of the group in the upcoming Strasbourg plenary, a parliament contact said.

From then on, the group will be entitled to EU funding and some positions within the European Parliament, such as vice-presidents of committees.

In total, the group consists of seven French MEPs (National Front), five Romanian MEPs (Romania Mare), three Flemish MEPs (Vlaams Belang), two Italian MEPs (Lista Mussolini and Fiamma Tricolore), and one MEP each from Bulgaria (Attack), Austria and the UK (both independents).

Neither the extreme far right nor the islamists are friends of conservatives. And don't get me started about the far left.

Good for them. Any turds that drop in the EU's punch bowl are fine by me.

However, it would be a mistake to assume thaqt they would automatically be friends of America. Some on the far European right are quite anti-American.

"Far Right" by Euro standards would be to the left of a typical hippie in the Peoples Republic of Austin, I'll bet!

Left and right are pretty confusing in Europe. Pim Fortuyn was a "far right" gay politician murdered by animal rights activists.

They're "diverse," on the one hand, and yet "xenophobes" on the other ... I'm sure the Euroninnies are jut absolutely torn over this ... what to do, what to DO? Oh, bother.

These must be the people throwing around the tacky joke floating around Germany lately. It involves Turks and Jews.

Well, goody. Europe has a far-right movement that's caught a second wind.

The left can't say we didn't tell them this would happen. Ignore moderate conservative beliefs, or try to marginalize them, and you end up strengthening fascists.

These guys are going to be, by and by, anti-American, anti-Semitic and anti-small government.

Europe is cruising towards another clash of extremist ideologies.

We have to take care this does not happen in North America.

Outrage in Belgium after television broadcast hoax

BRUSSELS: The newscast showed fuzzy pictures that appeared to be King Albert II and Queen Paola fleeing the country on an air force plane as a clutch of pro-monarchy demonstrators waved Belgian flags outside the royal palace. Then there was live footage of trams blocked at Belgium's new border.

I don't think they are anti-american.

Until we voice disapproval when they and Putin start dividing up Poland, gassing Jews, and raining bombs down on London.

One of the groups involved is the National Front, which has nazi ties, IIRC.

This coalition is likely to grow as the Muslim invasion of Europe grows. The Nazis were a reaction to the Bolsheviks and the anarchists.

The European "far right" tends to be very anti-American. Here are some nuggets about Austria's Haider, related to his trip to visit Saddam in 2002:

"Jörg Haider, the far-right politician, defended a three-day trip to Iraq where he met with President Saddam Hussein, saying that it was a humanitarian visit and that he had contributed equipment for a blood bank. Mr. Haider called for an end to United Nations sanctions, criticized American policy toward Iraq, ridiculed President Bush's notion of an ''axis of evil'' and warned that Europe must be wary tbat the fight against terrorism does not become ''a blank check for arms policy.'' Victor Homola (NYT)

---

"Austria's Freedom Party has defended far-right politician Joerg Haider's meeting in Baghdad with Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, who used the occasion to urge Europe to distance itself from the United States.

The party said Mr Haider's trip to the Iraqi capital was a "courageous" humanitarian initiative designed to supplement the activities of the Austrian Foreign Ministry, although a ministry spokesman indicated his department had not been fully informed of the mission."

-snip-

"Mr Haider has also personally nurtured ties in the Middle East.

Last November he travelled to Iran and Syria, and was recently seen in Vienna with the son of Libya leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Two years ago he caused a stir when he started providing cheap supplies of petrol in the province of Carinthia, where he is governor, shortly after a meeting with the Libyan leader."

Here's a 2003 article by Amir Taheri from the National Review, where Haider and and France's far right politician Le Pen are called Iraq's "noble friends" on Iraq TV, along with Noam Chomsky:

"Anyone watching Iraqi satellite television these days might easily conclude that the whole world is rising against the United States and in support of president Saddam Hussein.

The channel — owned by Saddam's eldest son, Uday — is broadcasting images of the despot being showered with rose petals. These images fade into portraits of some of Iraq's "noble friends," including the American Noam Chomsky, Britain's Tony Benn, France's Jean-Marie Le Pen, Austria's Jörg Haider, and Russia's Gennadi Zyuganov. These in turn fade into images of antiwar rallies from London to San Francisco, and passing by Berlin."

Here's Haider calling Dubya a war criminal, just a few months ago:

"He is a war criminal. He brought about the war against Iraq deliberately, with lies and falsehoods," Haider said in an interview with Austrian daily newspaper Die Presse.
