Help Wanted: Conservative in '08
FrontPageMag.com ^ | 1/11/07 | Dick Morris & Eileen McGann

It's getting to the point where the conservative - dominant - wing of the Republican Party needs to take out a want ad in the newspaper or post a listing on Craigslist.com to find a candidate for president. In the field taking shape before our eyes, none of the top four contenders is likely to satisfy their delicate palates - made more arrogant and discerning by decades of victories.

Rudy Guiliani? Pro-choice, pro-affirmative action, pro-gay rights, pro-immigration, pro-gun control Rudy? Righties will vote for him only if they have lobotomies first. Remember how the New York City Council prohibited the Boy Scouts from meeting on city property because they wouldn't let in gay scoutmasters? Rudy let it happen.

Yes. There is a war going on and of course Rudy Guiliani is the man we should have had all along running Homeland Security. Obviously, he is the candidate Osama would least like to see in the White House. But has the Religious Right so abandoned its agenda that it is willing to elect its ideological opposite president? Don't bet on it.

Sen. John McCain? The McCain of the Kennedy-McCain bill to let illegal immigrants become citizens? Of the "anti-torture" bill...

I still say Duncan Hunter would make the best candidate. We'll see what direction the GOP goes but hopefully the party is smart enough to watch all the nominees and not go by media favorites.

I first heard of Hunter just a few short weeks ago.

I realize that I do not keep up with these guys as much as I should, but there is virtually no name recognition within the population in general and this would have to change big time if he is to have a ghost of a chance.

I thought the front runner might be Allen...but he Macaca'd himself out of the running..

Now another thing about Hunter...he is a congressman. No executive experience and that is almost a must these days to get nominated and/or elected.

Just a few points we have to ponder.

I like Mike Pense, but it is too soon for him to make a serious run.

Executive experience is nice, however. There is no job in the world that can prepare you for the POTUS.

As it is, he does have many qualities that would befit a POTUS.

Neither House nor Senate field good GOP presidential candidates. Name one of which who has one the presidency recently.

Want conservative who can win, going to need to focus on governors. Right now, Haley Barbour is the only one who is on my radar as a potential. Romney is DOA because of gold tablets, magic underwear and the other things Mormon stuff the MSM will play up to destroy him...not counting he's a Taxachusetts guy...south inherently distrusts for that reason alone.

President Hunter sounds masculine not to mention invoking the killing and eating of animals. Seriously, we need to choose one conservative now and support him otherwise the liberal media will choose a candidate to their liking for us.

Haley? Overweight without military service. Now what recommends him?

Southern governor. Fiscal conservative. Would be strong on defense. Performed well post-Katrina.

I like Mike Pense, but it is too soon for him to make a serious run.

Did you forget the sarcasm tag? There is a reason everyone is announcing now. The first primary is only 10 months away. You have to be starting now or very soon to have the organization and money it will take to contest the first few states. You have to have the depth to move immediately from winning in New Hampshire(or finishing second and third) to running in South Carolina - then Michigan, then Washington, then New York, then Florida.

10 months is damn close to being too late. The top candidates have been planning, fund raising, hiring people, and lining up political supporters in primary states for years.

Mike Pence should run for Governor or Senator next, especially as he hasn't found the committment to get in the race until it's too late.

...and has about as much credibility on military matters as Mitt. How many family members have served in uniform lately?

I meant too early in his career. He doesn't have the experience needed for the job and unlike Obama bin laden, would not get a free pass by the media.

Nope, we need a fighter. When Haley was Republican Party Chief he was just as spineless as all the other Republicans out there. Bill Clinton & the Democrats walked all over him during the Government shutdown.

The last one from the house was Ford, and the last from the senate was JFK.

Let's see, the last time I posted this list it was yanked. Shall I dare try again? Sure!

1. Launch simultaneous unilateral preemptive nuclear military strikes at Syria, Iran, and North Korea.

2. Outlaw all forms of abortion (read murder of unborn children).

3. Institute permanent tax cuts.

4. Fix Social Security by ending it.

5. Secure our borders.

6. Resign from UN and get UN out of our country.

7. Increase military spending and preparedness.

8. Bring charges of treason against anti-American leftists and anti-American islamo-fascists and their supporters.

Duncan Hunter is still the best choice I've seen. I think he can take it to the house (the White House, that is).

Ford wasn't directly elected to the Presidency from Congress. JFK was a Dem.

This article lost credibility when it claimed that Rudy Guiliani would be the choice most likely to make Osama bin Laden unhappy. The notion that only the religious right has problems with Rudy Guiliani further destroys the credibility of the article and the writers. His positions on issues like gun control, abortion, and gay marriage make him unpopular with many folks who haven't been to church in years.

A few other names have been mentioned in other articles, and they are worth considering. Tommy Thompson, the former governor of Wisconsin, is considering a run. I don't know how strong a candidate he'd be, but he has some positives. Frank Keating, the former governor of Oklahoma, could also be a strong candidate. I'm not saying that I like either one of them, but Republicans need to consider them.

I don't know much about Duncan Hunter at this point. My biggest concern is that he'd not have the strength even to win his home state as a Congressman. The lack of executive experience will work against him as well. I may be supporting him in six months, but he will have a hard time winning either the nomination or the general election.

Bill
