(Since so called "winning")he has faced his granddaughter's death by drug overdose; he has been sued for bouncing checks at Atlantic City, N.J., casinos; he has been ordered to undergo rehab after being arrested on drunken driving charges; his vehicles and business have been burglarized; and he has been sued by the father of an 18-year-old boy, a friend of his granddaughter's, who was found dead in Whittaker's house. Sounds like winning wasn't the American dream. Materilism at it best.

Agreed. I try to defend my state from time to time against unfair criticism Glad you put the disclaimer "unfair" in that sentence, cause there isn't enought hours in the day.

I watched some show about the "curse" of lotto winners. I was amazed at how many wind up bankrupt, divorced, in jail or dead.

Whittaker told French's lawyer, John Barrett, that "a team of crooks" cashed checks in September at 12 City National Bank branches and "got all my money," He is a liar. No one keeps large amounts of money in a checking account. You keep it in some other account and transfer it to checking as needed.

I always liked the term "dumber than a fence post"
It just amazes me that these people (lottery winners) still do this kind of stuff (blow it all).
Don't they realize that this stuff has happened in the past and they should take steps to keep it from happening to their selves?
Lotteries are an evil side of our government; they prey on the less informed and funnel money to govt coffers.

You can insure bank deposits for any amount. Usually, the bank will pick up the tab for the extra insurance, since they want the deposit.

He won the jackpot twice.
He has, or had if he blew it, a large company so he isn't hurting for cash.

Man, if I won $315 million, not only would I still have it in hand, but very few people would ever see me again. I'd just flat up and disappear to a castle hidden within a remote Western US mountain range. Supplies would be flown in via helicopter.
At that point, I would be so rich as to transcend politics like the old money Mayflower yuppies of New England: Who cares about politics when the system works just fine ... at least from the ultra-rich perspective.
Why John Kerry thinks he needs to be a Senator is beyond my comprehension, at least for me considering his position. He's got everything he could possibly want, so he must be pretending he's Santa Claus for the needy with our money. It's just a hobby to him. He couldn't possibly genuinely care, could he?
