. . . Michael Nifongs inflammatory statements to the media prior to the May elections, for the sole benefit of Mr. Nifong, turned the complaint of a confused young woman into a vicious political game which has brought the office of the district attorney into disrepute. He has ruined lives and reputations for a paycheck and personal political gain.
This so-called investigation has been a reprehensible sham from the very beginning. The grand jury has a right to facts rather than lies and innuendo, and the public has a right to a fair indictment. Further, Nifong concealed the actual DNA test results from the defense and failed to investigate the complaint and failed to interview the complainant until last week, when he dropped the rape charges. But the damage was done long ago this scandal will always be known as the Duke lacrosse rape case.
As the Supreme Court said over 70 years ago, the prosecutor does not represent an ordinary party, he represents the people, and his job isnt to win convictions, but to see justice is done. It is as much his duty to refrain from antics calculated to produce a wrongful conviction as it is to use every legitimate means to bring about a just one. Shame on Mr. Nifong.
It's about time.
Has the Reveruund Sharpton commented on this case? I have heard nothing from him.
so where's 'N.O.W.' on this?
does Nifong get honorary membership?
The Donks will run him for governor.
These Johnny's are coming very lately if you ask me.
You know the saying about broken watches :). This is one of those times.
The mother of one of his victims says the families are going after him. I can't wait. I want every pandering government employee to see what happens to this creep.
Nifong ping!
What's your point, that the Duke boys are really guilty?
Not in the least. My point, which I should have made clearer, is that if the DA is supposed to be interested in justice, not convictions, and the defense attorney is supposed to be interested in acquittal, not justice, the notion of finding guilt and punishing it gets underweighted.
In other words, no matter what the DAs are supposed to be interested in, it's my belief they are out to got convictions, not justice. Justice is what's left over when the two sides have finished tearing up the opposition. It's not something either of them pursue.
I see your point, and I had misunderstood you. Thanks for your explanation of your position.
Re: "Nifong should be ousted and disbarred for his witch hunt against the Duke kids. They are now ruined. They will have this stigma attached to them for a long time."
No one knows who the Duke kids are, unless one takes the trouble to look. Everyone in the country knows who Nifong is, although perhaps not in the context he would like. I was tempted to call his office to "congratulate" him on his picture taking up a good part of the opinion page in yesterday's Wall Street Journal (in a Dorothy Rabinowitz column).
The verb "Nifong" will probably enter the English language, like Boycott (the subject of ostracism in the 19th century) and Quisling (after the infamous Norwegian traitor). E.g. "The Amiraults were allegedly Nifonged by Scott Harshbarger."
Exactly, she isn't the poor little victim and we need to stop letting them get away with referring to her in this way. She is the false accuser, the liar, the perjurer, the malicious and vindictive deceitful one behind this. Nifong is merely the political opportunist/psychopath who has no problem destroying the lives of innocent people to achieve his political goals.
No matter how naiive the denizens of a place like Durham NC might be, one single psycho DA acting alone could not flamboozle them this badly. This thing is the work of several hundred committed leftist ideologues in the Duke University administration and faculty.
