Club smoking ban a drag for Republicans, not Democrats
The Hill ^ | January 11, 2007 | Emily Heil

Looks like members of Congress will just have to huddle out of doors, with their cold, shivery fingers gripping their cigarettes, just like the rest of us. Or at least the Republican ones will.

Although House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Wednesday banned smoking in the once notoriously nicotine-friendly Speaker’s Lobby, Democrats can still retire to the comforts of the Democratic National Club for a smoke. The venue, located just blocks from the Capitol, offers a bar, dining room, and private dining and meeting spaces. And the private club still permits smoking in certain areas, even though there’s a distinctly anti-smoker vibe in the air, what with D.C. instituting a smoking ban at the beginning of the year and cigarettes being snuffed out in the Speaker’s Lobby.

But the Dem club’s Republican counterpart, the Capitol Hill Club, is taking the no-butts climate to (a presumably healthier) heart. The club has banned smoking in the facility beginning Jan. 2, a club employee tells us.

Glad to see that the folks who brought us the smoke-free workplace now have to live under the same tyranny.

To hell with all of those Congressional SOBs for allowing the persecution of smokers in the first place. They brought this on themselves.

Again, I don't smoke, maybe a cigar 2 times a year, but I want the property owners of the bar I go to setting the rules. Not 1,000 little smoking Nazis, local or part of the Fed.

You said a mouthful!  The smoking bans should have been left up to the business owner and his patrons.  NOT the damn government!  Do you know how many businesses across the United States that have had to close because of this damn ban????? A LOT, let me tell you!!

But do the lawmakers care???? HELL NO!  We vote them in and then they screw us!

Sounds like the people at the Capitol Hill Club are a bunch of petty bitches too!

However, they should all live under the same laws as us.

Agreed. Those laws should be that restaurants and other places where people go of their own free will can allow smoking if the owners wish it--but there I go, sounding like one of those crazed fossils again...

I have no idea.  With all the sigma attached to smokers today, they probably hide it if they smoke....
