Rice: Single women can understand war
By ANNE GEARAN, AP Diplomatic Writer 7 minutes ago
Condoleezza Rice let out a heavy sigh when asked Saturday whether as a single woman with no children she had difficulty appreciating the ramifications of war. It's a topic that has inflamed the Internet and talk radio in the U.S. since a Democratic senator challenged the secretary of state's personal stake in the Iraq war.
"No," Rice answered when asked if her status hinders her understanding of the sacrifices involved. "I also think that being a single woman does not in any way make me incapable of understanding not just those sacrifices but also that nothing of value is ever won without sacrifice."
Sen. Barbara Boxer (news, bio, voting record), D-Calif., told Rice during a testy Senate hearing on Thursday that without an immediate family Rice will pay no personal price for the Bush administration policy in Iraq.
Rice has said she was at first perplexed by the exchange, and later told Fox News, "Gee, I thought single women had come further than that."
Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh accused Boxer of hitting "below the ovaries."
Standing with Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, Rice jokingly noted that as a woman with children, Livni is qualified to "make the decisions."
Livni leapt to Rice's defense, saying Rice's strong emotions about the Iraq war toll are clear during their private conversations.
Rice, 52, has never married. She is an only child and her parents are dead.

But apparently Boxer cannot.
Well, I think Congressional Republicans should understand that turnabout is fair play and tell Boxer that since she's never served in the military, she has zero credibility when it comes to military advice or the WOT.
I can't believe the stupidity on the part of the DhimmicRats here. Single women are one of their most important demographic groups, and they come out and crap on them. Brilliant.
The irony is that a larger proportion of single or childless women are Democrats rather than Republicans.
Boxer showed how ignorant, immature and stupid she was in one little compact statement.
The Democrats crap on ALL their supporters: Women, Blacks, and Jews. Leftists are disfunctional people filled with self-hate.
Babs is incapable of understanding even the most simple concepts -- she and Patty Murray are the two dumbest Senators. In a more sane era those two would have trouble getting elected president of their local PTAs.
Rice is like many people in service who sacrifice their personal lives, 1 or more of their 5 senses or limbs, and possibly other abilities for the sake of the United States of America. Many in Congress or former administrations not only have or do not make such sacrifices, but also do not even understand the concept.
She had a little more "war" than most of us, when she was a child.
I don't have any children nor have I ever served in the military but that doesn't mean that I don't understand what's at stake. I'm actually rather cautious about the whole thing but I know that failure in the WOT is not an option. I'm not willing to pass that kind of world on to anyone else's kids.
Where are the feminists who like to talk about women's independence and told them to burn the Bra? Oh yeah, they're busy helping Hillary, whose husband used his power to get sex from women...
Poor Barbara:
In 1994, her daughter, Nicole Boxer, married Tony Rodham, brother of then-First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, in a ceremony at the White House. The couple had one son, Zachary, and divorced in 2000.
Any person who's first concern is their own families interests, should never be a senator of the United States.
Boxer's point seems to imply that mothers can't be trusted to make decisions on matters of national interests.
LOLOL...I wonder if Boxer's husband would re-marry her if he had the chance???? IMHO: NOT!!!!
