RALEIGH, N.C. — A man suspected of decapitating his 4-year-old daughter and leaving the body for her mother to find in their suburban home was arrested in Washington, D.C., early Saturday, authorities said.
Investigators have not found any history of domestic or mental health problems at the home, and still have no leads as to a possible motive in the killing, said Clayton police Lt. Jon Gerrell.
Amber Violette told police Friday evening she had found her daughter, Katlin, with her head severed from her body, police said.
An "edged weapon" believe to have been used in the killing was found in the house, though Gerrell declined to give more details.
"This is devastating for the whole community as a whole, and it's the most horrific thing I've seen in 13 years of police work," said Sgt. S.P. Lapsley. "That a father could do this to his child, I just can't believe it."
John Patrick Violette's vehicle was found at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, and investigators learned he had taken a flight to Washington. Deputy U.S. marshals arrested the 37-year-old after police tracked his credit card to the hotel, Lapsley said.
Police said Violette, 37, would be held in Washington pending an extradition on a murder charge expected to be filed in Clayton, about 15 miles southeast of Raleigh. The U.S. Marshals Service said an extradition hearing is expected to be held Tuesday.
The mother is not a suspect in the investigation, and Lapsley said police don't expect to make any more arrests.

This man isn't insane in any legal sense.The fact that he made efforts to flee and conceal his whereabouts is mens rea.
Now if he ran out of the house claiming that he just killed the Antichrist and wanted to be interviewed by the Pope and Nancy Grace that would be insane.
No, the purpose of execution is the a) punish the offender and 2) protect society from further damage by him.
People react viscerally to this kind of horrific crime but generally speaking, I think they really just want the perps gone in the quickest, cleanest way possible.
Correct. There are some monstrous acts which we, as mere flawed, sinful mortals, are simply not qualified nor wise enough to "judge", and sometimes the best we can do is be content with removing the threat from our plane of existence.

Reading this sad story I'd guess that the guy basically flipped-out. That doesn't make him innocent by any stretch, but I think there is a difference between someone that kills because of mental strain and one that kills just for the pleasure of it.
Both people exist and I'm not sure both should be treated the same way. I'd say this guy would be much less a threat than a Ted Bundy, or the BTK serial killer, for example.
Some people here seem to get some kind of joy fantasizing about what they could do to this man. And that makes them much more like the Ted Bundys of the world.
I can think of four reasons for the death penalty - punishment, revenge, deterrence, and self-defense.
The only reason we really need is the last, and let God handle the other three.

You are correct.
Arrest him, try him, find him guilty, sentance him to death and execute the sentance. This is simply a mechanism for legitimate government to rid itself of those criminals who are good for nothingness. The prosector's office and the defense are simply there to identify the charges and any purient interests which might affect the decisions each step of they way.
There are costs to freedom and liberty.
Sometimes folks have no sense of irony. Here they are outraged at the horrific and depraved acts of this man and what is their proposed solution?....Horrific and depraved acts.
The irony is they have more in common with the perpetrator psychologically than the victim.
I agree with you. And letting the victims family or loved ones stone them to death or pour the gas on the killer would be fine. Stake them out over a hill of fire ants and I could go on and on....
This man isn't insane. He fled which demonstrates his awareness of the nature of his acts.
But that is beside the point. You and Mr.Violette share common psychological ground., You wish to engage in torture and inflict brutal suffering for the pure moral pleasure of it. Get some help.
The thing to do is try and execute this man quickly and humanely.
In RESPONSE to a horrific and depraved act. I don't think anyone here has advocated these things just to pass the time of day, but as fitting retribution.

Oh yeah. Killing one's own child by decapitating her head, then leaving severed head and body for her mother to find for no apparent reason is the same as wanting to slowly do the same to this man as retribution for his actions.
I'm afraid I'd have to stake him out on the ground spread eagle then dust him down with a box or two of Drano and tell him not to sweat.
Because that is how civilized countries operate.
