Correct. There are some monstrous acts which we, as mere flawed, sinful mortals, are simply not qualified nor wise enough to "judge", and sometimes the best we can do is be content with removing the threat from our plane of existence.
I can think of four reasons for the death penalty - punishment, revenge, deterrence, and self-defense.
The only reason we really need is the last, and let God handle the other three.
