NORTH COUNTY -- U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter's long-shot bid for the 2008 GOP presidential nomination got a boost over the weekend when he emerged on top in a straw poll of Republican precinct committeemen in Arizona's most-populated county. Hunter, R-El Cajon, got 96 votes among the 458 ballots in the non-binding poll of Maricopa County party officials asked to list their first choice for president.
Hunter easily beat Arizona's own U.S. Sen. John McCain, considered a front-runner in the GOP presidential race, who drew a comparatively paltry 50 votes. Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney came in second in Saturday's poll with 82 first-place votes.

If you make one, add me, please. I'm not sold on Hunter yet, but he's currently the best option I can see.

Hmmm... so he is beginning to be noticed. They should know him well in Arizona though, very close to his district.
As you can see by the Pic, someone asked for our thoughts on our current GOP candidates... Thes are MY Takes... what about yours?

McCain is not well-liked here in Arizona, and this poll is the proof. He got re-elected because no-one ran against him.
This straw poll outcome, though local, is a national embarrassment for McWhacked. Hubba hubba ...

Your assessments of the GOP candidates is pretty good.
Sam Brownback-is a good conservative but his weakness is being for amnesty.
Jim Gilmore-good conservative, has the more 'illustrious' position as being a Governor but how effective is he at making his position known and being up for a tough campaign?
Newt Gingrich-conservative on everything but morals. Very talented and effective with message but his personal failings are enough to stick him with the hypocrisy label and do him in. Doesn't help how he was pushed out as Speaker and very unpopular.
Rudy Giuliani-good Republican with fighting terror and his outlook on foreign affairs and law and order but for gun control, abortion, gay rights, didn't he endorse Bill Clintoon for president in '96?
Chuck Hagel-he's a Republican? He needs to get out.
Mike Huckabee-good conservative but same with Gilmore in how effective they'll be with their message and campaign.
Duncan Hunter-obviously my fave. Honorable decorated Vietnam vet, conservative rep. from CA who has chaired the armed services committee and made the military his specialty, along with border issues. Son served in Iraq. Good, no nonsense man who takes on the media/Demonrats with their absurdity and treason. Outspoken and would do very well in debates. He may not have the more 'illustrious' position of Gov. or Senator and biggest name but other than Rudy or McCain, frankly neither do the Governors or Senators that are also in this race.
John McCain-yes, he's a Vietnam vet who was POW. But he has strayed from many conservative values and has undermined them in what seems to be due to his anger from not getting the nomination 2000. Has a bad temper and can appear rather loony.
George Pataki-my former Governor and like many northeastern Republicans, a RINO.
Mitt Romney-he's not even sure where he stands, needs those consultants. Would be a pushover to Demonrats calling for 'bipartisanship' and a continuation of the 'new tone'.
Tom Tancredo-good conservative, strong on illegal immigration but can have too much foot in mouth.
Tommy Thompson-good conservative, an 'illustrious' position as Governor but not effective campaigner and speaker. Can appear dull.
