Fox News adds fire to meeting

BULLHEAD CITY - It's not often that the discussion of a TV show is placed on the Bullhead City Council agenda in the form of a public hearing, but that's what's in store for tonight's meeting.

The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in the council chamber at City Hall. The very last item on the agenda is discussion and possible action regarding the Fox News Channel program “Hannity's America” which aired Jan. 7.

A segment of the program featured a story on the proposed second bridge between Bullhead City and Laughlin, charging that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Searchlight) would benefit financially from the new bridge.

That accusation has officials on both sides of the river worried that such publicity could impede efforts to get more federal and state funding to build the bridge.

Bullhead City Mayor Diane Vick saw the program. “I felt it was very inappropriate,” she said. “In fact (the next morning) I sent an e-mail to Mr. Hannity explaining to him that he did not have the facts, that it was entirely wrong and I ended it with saying something to the effect of ‘Shame on you, Mr. Hannity ... what you accuse the far left of doing you are now doing' ... “

Vick said she was a fan of the nightly program Hannity & Colmes on the Fox News Channel “ ... and I was actually hoping that we would receive a response because I do know that (Council member) Larry Sinagoga sent an e-mail. The City Manager sent an e-mail,” she said, “and I was really hoping we'd have some kind of response by now but we have not as far as I know.”

Fox bills itself as “Fair and Balanced,” Vick said. “It was not fair and it was not balanced.”

Vick asked how Reid could benefit financially “ ... when we haven't even picked out a site.”

In other council business, a public hearing will address possible approval to transfer $3.6 million from the General Fund Contingency to complete the East/West Corridor project.

There will be a discussion during a public hearing to consider forming a Youth Advisory Commission, to highlight the concerns of the city's young people regarding certain issues that come before the council.

Quarterly reports will be given by Mike Conner, president and CEO of the Bullhead Area Chamber of Commerce and Richard Adams, Bullhead Regional Economic Development Authority director.

Bullhead City Hall is located at 1255 Marina Blvd.

Fox news out and out lied about this bridge situation. It's true that it was buried in the transporation bill, and it probably shouldn't have. It's also true that the bridge would benefit the casinos on the Nevada side. HOWEVER, Fox news made it sound like it was an unnecessary bridge to nowhere, only benefitting Mr. Reid. and that's an out and out lie. This is a very conservative area, and I hope Hannity at least mentions that there were some mistakes in reporting. There's enough truth about Reid's corruption. They don't have to make things up.

Fox news made it sound like it was an unnecessary bridge

To American taxpayers who will never use it or disapprove of gambling, it is a bridge to nowhere.

Anything that benefits Nevada, or the casinos, will likely result in benefiting Harry Reid. Why would that be a lie by Fox News?

Pork Barrel Politics

Yea, never happened before my little city got involved, did it? The fact is that so much of that transportation bill had pork in it. If you scrutinize one, scrutinize them all...but get the facts straight.

Is this a question of federal funds going to this project, or not?

The funds were approved. Whether you agree with it or not is not the point. The point is that this is a badly needed bridge. Fox News made it sound like it was put together just to make Reid some money. As much as I'd like to think that's true (I DETEST REID as much as the next guy), it's just not true.

There are lists all over of pork barrel transportation projects going well beyond this one example.

I also note, from the LA Times, "The proposed bridge between Laughlin and Bullhead City was not on the priority list sent to local members of Congress by either the Nevada or Arizona transportation agencies."

Let them raise the money for their own bridge. As a taxpayer I see NO REASON to pay for it federally. Its not like that bridge is an absolute necessity like the 600+ ones here in the 'Burgh are.

'Specially since it'll help Reid in any way.

That's not what they said. Tommy, do you really think I would post this if I didn't think it was wrong of Fox? Come on.

Build it yourself, then.

Don't rob us in the rest of the United States to help Harry.

Float a bond issue like they used to do. Charge tolls to pay for it,. Keep out of the federal purse.

AARGGHHH...Then let's go through every single piece of pork that any politician, Dem or Rep, puts into a bill. I'm all for that. If it was a showing all the projects that got put into that bill that shouldn't, that's fine. But it specifically targete4d this bridge and made it sound like it was a bridge that was not needed. There is a four lane bridge that does connect Bullhead with Laughlin, but it's gridlocked most of the time. Mohave County is the largest growing Country in the Country. They took the cameras at a time when the bridge was relatively empty just to make the case that this new bridge was not necessary. I don't like that kind of reporting from any news network, I don't care who it winds up benefiting or hurting. It does nobody any good and we're left to pick up the pieces.

How many bridges does Bullhead City need?

Me thinkest thou protesteth too much. Maybe ya'all should be screaming to have your taxes reduced so that you will have the extra funds to pay for the bridge yourself. Or maybe you can ask those that will benefit from having the extra bridge pay for it out of their own pocket. Nothing personal but I know that as an Arizona resident I will never use it. Spent a weekend in that God forsaken community years ago and swore that I'd never go back. It's hot, dusty and a tourist trap. I hate to sound redundant but hey... make the Casinos pay for it. Nevada Residents don't pay any state income taxes. Put a 1/2¢ sales tax on their groceries until the bridge is paid for and those of you in Bullhead City can also implement the same tax on your citizens. Leave my money alone.

Just a thought.

I saw that piece, and I seem to remember him talking to a man on the street in Bullhead City who didn't seem to agree too much that a second bridge was needed.

But I've never been there myself so I don't really know the area.

If you all don't think that federal money pays for things in your neck of the woods, you're not as smart as I assume you are. Stop it all then. That's fine with me.

Fine with me. However, because lots of politicians indulge in pork, you act that Reid is therefore absolved of doing such - even though he hectored the GOP about ethics in the campaign last year.

So what if its gridlocked? Live with a little *&&^%#$$%^&^5 inconvenience, willya? If this IS the fastest growing county then get used to the ideas of gridlock and traffic jams.

I have to sit on the Liberty bridge and then the d*mn tubes for 45 minutes during rush hour sometimes.

Welcome to the real world, my friend.
