51% of Women Are Now Living Without Spouse
New York Times ^ | 16 January 2007 | Sam Roberts

For what experts say is probably the first time, more American women are living without a husband than with one, according to a New York Times analysis of census results.

In 2005, 51 percent of women said they were living without a spouse, up from 35 percent in 1950 and 49 percent in 2000.

Coupled with the fact that in 2005 married couples became a minority of all American households for the first time, the trend could ultimately shape social and workplace policies, including the ways government and employers distribute benefits.

Several factors are driving the statistical shift. At one end of the age spectrum, women are marrying later or living with unmarried partners more often and for longer periods. At the other end, women are living longer as widows and, after a divorce, are more likely than men to delay remarriage, sometimes delighting in their newfound freedom.

In addition, marriage rates among black women remain low. Only about 30 percent of black women are living with a spouse, according to the Census Bureau, compared with about 49 percent of Hispanic women, 55 percent of non-Hispanic white women and more than 60 percent of Asian women.

In a relatively small number of cases, the living arrangement is temporary, because the husbands are working out of town, are in the military or are institutionalized. But while most women eventually marry, the larger trend is unmistakable.

I can't stand a lot of the under-30 women I've worked with in an office environment. They're just plain vicious, acting the way they probably think "powerful men" are supposed to act.

I haven't seen that in under-30 women. I've seen some of it in the 40-55 age group, but less than is popularly believed.

Sound familiar? Shoes on the other foot might be a bit tight.

Not even close actually. You see I was a single father during my own divorce ('mommy' needed to 'discover herself'), then 'mommy' got our son and discovered he was a paycheck generator. Guess who threatened to sue while changing the custody proceedings in mid stride?

I didn't have 50 grand laying around for court. Now she has him.

All women should disregard (note spelling) what you're saying, no matter how you categorize them.

Of course, the article neglects the obvious reason this is the case, and it is NOT that single mothers have recently skyrocketed: people are living longer, and women living longer than men. There is no question there are more moms squirting out bastards, but the real rise in this number ain't Murphy Browns--it's Great-Gramma Brown, who continues to hang on to life thanks to modern medicine.

All that stuff is fine. Bering masculine isn't a series of tricks you do or don't do. It's the way you carry yourself, confidence, dominance, making her feel safe, making her feel pretty and sexy, and other stuff.

delighting in their newfound freedom

This guy assumes that all women are like his ex wife.

how does a man stay masculine enough within a marriage to sustain a wife's interest when it comes time to do the dishes

What difference does it make when it's time for the woman to do the dishes?

clean the cat-box

If your dog chases the cats away, there' no need for a cat box.

I know what you mean. I was sitting down eating someplace, and i saw three women, all about 25-30 (babes i must add). All three were pushing strollers and all three had no wedding ring on. Kind of a depressing sight.

Do the dishes and break a few, evnetually she will want to do the dishes to save them.

Then do the yard, fix stuff around the house and kill bugs. Shoot a coyote once in a while.

I couldn't help it. I've seen it on various threads on FR, and it immediately came to mind when I saw that post. I googled 'cup cleavage' and it was about the first image that came up! :)

Ah, the vaunted "smart dummy" technique. (Don't give all our tricks away.)

Obviously this thread brings out those who feel support is unfair. Its common knowledge that no one gets rich off divorce. I guess it depends what side you are on. Many women never get it and a lot of them do not even bother to fight for it. Surprising how people think that whomever is taking care of the kids has the easy life.
