51% of Women Are Now Living Without Spouse
New York Times ^ | 16 January 2007 | Sam Roberts

For what experts say is probably the first time, more American women are living without a husband than with one, according to a New York Times analysis of census results.

In 2005, 51 percent of women said they were living without a spouse, up from 35 percent in 1950 and 49 percent in 2000.

Coupled with the fact that in 2005 married couples became a minority of all American households for the first time, the trend could ultimately shape social and workplace policies, including the ways government and employers distribute benefits.

Several factors are driving the statistical shift. At one end of the age spectrum, women are marrying later or living with unmarried partners more often and for longer periods. At the other end, women are living longer as widows and, after a divorce, are more likely than men to delay remarriage, sometimes delighting in their newfound freedom.

In addition, marriage rates among black women remain low. Only about 30 percent of black women are living with a spouse, according to the Census Bureau, compared with about 49 percent of Hispanic women, 55 percent of non-Hispanic white women and more than 60 percent of Asian women.

In a relatively small number of cases, the living arrangement is temporary, because the husbands are working out of town, are in the military or are institutionalized. But while most women eventually marry, the larger trend is unmistakable.

Your experience is 1 in a million.

I've seen reports about this, and I'm not surprised.

Women are more likely to be "faithful", spiritual, and perhaps, men are less likely to want to be "tied up" by "rules".

Im not in total disagreement with some of what youre saying, but you really shouldnt tack on all the other things simply because of a tatoo!

I have one, got it in a moment of youthful rebellion. However, I am the typical stay at home mom/wife. I get up at 430 am make my husbands coffee, breakfast and pack his lunch and at 6am do the same for our son.

I bake, cook, clean and do the laundry. cat box too (yuck). Ive even been known to help my husband with construction work on the house and help fix the cars if he needs me.

I know how hard he works each day and believe my job, as a wife is to make sure all his needs are taken care of. i dont even make him take out the trash, though i do make him mow the lawn in the summer:)

Just because a woman has a tatoo, doesnt mean all the rest of your list applys. She could very well still be the typical old fashioned girl-you might be missing out!

"what's so great about the mona lisa?
what the difference between decorating the body with tattoos and decorating the body with make up? don't talk about the permanancy of it either, a woman who puts on her make up everyday might as well have it tattoo'ed to her face."

You REALLY don't grasp the difference?

Miss January --Helen Thomas

Miss February --Nancy Pelosi

Miss March --Cindy Sheehan

Miss April - Hillary

Miss May - Barbara Boxer

Who would like to finish up the year?

1 in a million is quite an exaggeration.
I also don't agree with your opinion that women are more faithful and spiritual. That may have been true 50 years ago but I bet its much more equal today.

I agree. You CANNOT get rid of it, certainly not without a lot of concommitant pain. And it's all over, potentially, not just a face.

Sorry, it's not attractive.

Why can't they just get temporary paint-on tatoos? Like we used to get out of Cracker Jacks?

That said, I do like alot of people who have tatoos; indeed, alot are great conservatives. I just think that they made a bad choice.

I read your "152"..... not so bad!

But you reminded me of a TRUE situation..from a few years ago..

I had to drop into the nearest store - a Target - to buy some batteries for my camera. It was just before Halloween - and the battery section was near the costume section...

I heard a little girls voice, from across the corridor -- "Please Mom, I don't want to look like a whore for Halloween".... I just had to look around the corner - to see the costume the MOM was holding us for the about 8 year old girl's opinion...

The little girl was right -- and obviously had more sense than the mom.
Now, one needs to wonder how did an 8yo learn about the word and meaning of "whore"?

Why is it women almost always outnumber men in churches, period? Not only in membership, but in clubs, duties, classes, everything?

No, I have no numbers, but I've seen stats. And I, too, have "experienced" it.

Yep.....

Those proud eagles looking up, on the posteriors of young girls today -- are going to look like wrinkled old vultures looking down upon carrion below the belt line when those young girls sag with age..

lol So todays modern women get inked like men, fight like men, drink at bars like men, have many sexual partners before the age of 21 like men, cuss like men, behave like men errrrrr, dogs. Not to mention the weight challenges and the kids in tow and the advent of feel good medicine like zoloft, xanax, etc, etc.

I realize that men aren't exactly apostles of Christ, but there reaches a point where we may just be better off living alone.

How old is the Mona Lisa? And how long have those girls had their tatoos? Check back with any of them in 10 to 20 years and see which you prefer.
