When will world confront the undead of Croatia?

LAS VEGAS // President Bush recently echoed Vice President Dick Cheney's support for Croatia to join the European Union, a bid that has been stalled because of the former Yugoslav republic's slowness to own up to and prosecute its 1990s war crimes and its failure to ensure protections and rights for minorities, including returning Serb refugees.

Croatia also faces the possibility of being excluded from the 2008 European soccer championship because when an Italian team's fans taunted the Croatian team's fans at a match in August by waving Yugoslavia's old communist flag, the other side took great offense and showed the competition what it was really made of: They formed a giant human swastika and gave Nazi salutes....

Re: Mile Budak - in the opinion of many, he was the best Croatia writer (better than Krleza), but an idiot to get involved in Ustashe politics. It seems that several attempts on his life by Serbs in first Yugoslavia, because of his writing, prompted him to join the Ustashe movement. He was distancing himself later on, but his early fascist pronouncements, stuck. He was shot after the war, and some streets were called after him, because of his writing, not the fascist past (Famous American poet Ezra Pound, was a fascist, but still a great poet - German composer Richard Wagner was anti-semite, and hero to many Nazis, but a still a great composer, and not banned in Germany or even Israel).

It does not worry me to much what Budak said some 70 years ago, altough highly despicable and it should be deservedly condemned. What worries me more that at the present time the winner of the Serbian elections of a week ago, Vojislav Seselj (ultra nationalist, fascist Radical Party, indicted as a War criminal at the Hague), still wants to kill Croatian with rusty spoons (to prolong their suffering) or when the Serbian Prime Minister Kostunica sings Chetnik (fascist) songs, presumably trying to scare Croats and other nationalities in xYU.

See here how Serbs treated Jews in the WWII, claiming that after only a few month of a fascist rule in 1941, they solved the Jewish problem.

The "solving of the Jewish question" in Serbia during WWII was entirely in the hands of Wehrmacht and Gestapo because Serbia, unlike Croatia, was under direct Wehrmacht military control.

What you claim is only a Nazi revisionist attempt to exonerate the Nazis and accuse Serbs instead.

It is interesting that Croats and Bosnian Muslims do not boast of ther "achievement" - the first Judenrein city of Europe was Sarajevo, then located in Nazi Croatia.

I do feel sorry for the lost souls of Croatian youth - first brainwashed by Communists and then poisoned with Neonazi propaganda. Vile and stupid, like comparrison of Wagner and Budak.

Richard Wagner was not a minister in Third Reich government and was not in capacity to destroy human life like Budak. He died in 1883. Comparing Wagner with Mile Budak is only a sign of Croatian mindlessness in attempting to defend Ustasha genocide at any cost, falsifying the facts (e.g. claiming that Chetniks were fascists) and repeating lies ad nauseam.

According to you Serbs are always innocent: who killed the Croatian leaders in the Belgrade parliament (Serbs did it!), who terrorised and economically destroyed Croatia from 1918 to 1941 (Serbs did it!), who joined the Tripartite Pact in 1941 with Nazi Germany etc (Serbs did it!), who killed thousands and thousands of Muslims in Sandjak and Kosovo (Serbs did it! - vojvoda Djuretic received Iron Cross from Hitler), 14.000 Jews from Belgrade did not survive the war (Serbs did it!). And so on - the lists is too long.

And according to you, Serbs are innocent, it is always somebody elses fault. Over 200,000 people died in the latest war (remember Srebrenica etc).

And you constantly bring up the Croatian fascist crimes from WWII (you do not mentioned that hundreds of of thousands of Croats joined the resistance, appaled by the Ustashe crimes), because you are trying to whitewash terrible Serbian crimes commited since 1918.

Just grow up my dear friend!

What you wrote is as truthful as your claim that "Over 200,000 people died in the latest war"

Even if what you wrote about the Serbs in WWII is true (and it is not) it can not diminsh the responsibility of Croatia for the genocide 1941-45. It is an attempt to relativize Croatia's crime of genocide.

Comparing a politicaly motivated murder of two Croat politicians (perp was Montenegrin) with genocide of 700 000+ Serbs is bad taste bordering on moral blindness.

What you wrote about many Croats oposing Ustasha regime and joining Partisan movement, it is true, but it occured AFTER the capitulation of Italy in September of 1943 when many Domobrans joined the Partisans. Do I have to remind you that when it was obvious that Axis powers and Croatia were losing the war.

All anyone has to do is read some of the letters that Julia Gorin received from angry Croats and posted on her blog in response to this article on "Croatia's Undead". http://www.juliagorin.com

The letters mostly begin by saying something to the effect that "Croatians were not GD Nazis, you stupid Jew bitch..." and then allude to the idea that she either "should be raped by Ante Pavelic in Hell" or that "she must either be of Serb blood or screwing a Serb". Nice. And oh-so-not-Nazi-racist, right?

On the other hand, Julia also recieved some letters from grateful Croats, who applauded her for telling the truth.
This was an indictment of attitudes and behaviors, not of Croats as a people.

Thanks for your post.

Madness, IMO!

The selection of the letters is totally selective: Ms Golin (or her Serbian editor, as the person editing understands Serbian/Croatian!) published only letters, which show Croats as total idiots. This is not fair, as there were at least 5 letters (written by me and my friends), which were respectful and which totally nullified Ms Golin arguments. Why at least one was not published? The answer is that Serbs due to their hatred for Croats, never play fair. The best example is the thread here. Lies, exaggerations, twisted arguments and so on.

LOL! Julia Gorin has no "Serbian editor" -- nor is the Baltimore Sun "run by Serbs". If that were true, Serbs would have gotten a lot better press over the years!

It's your mindset that is stilted -- you seem to think that when Croats win, it's "because God wanted that way" and when Serbs win, "it's because they cheat". When Croats look like idiots, it's because someone "made them look that way", not because "some really acted like idiots and deserved what they got". And you don't think that is bigoted?. This mindset sounds much like the narcissistic Islamists we are dealing with today, where when they lose, they wallow in their victimhood for the cameras, and when they win, they are unapologetic no matter what the means or the cost to the innocent of their supposed "victory".

You'll get no sympathy from me on this one. When I wrote an article in my local paper that was critical of Tudjman during the war in Croatia, I had phone calls day and night from lunatic Croats who threatened my life, my family, and even my dog! If I hadn't had Croat family myself, I am sure that I would have learned to hate, too. But, as always it's the nutcases of every nationality who get the attention. Serbs are used to this after 15 years of bad press, Croats are not. Welcome to our world!

I just said that Ms. Gorin possibly a Serbian editor on her blog, as the person who selected the letters understand Serbian/Croatian. Check it up yourself.

According to you, Croats are bad, and Serbs are good. Can you please explain, why then not a single nation (not even Montenegrins) in former Yugoslavia wanted to live with Serbs together? Something must be wrong there.

"According to you, Croats are bad, and Serbs are good.

Not true. But check your Ustashi idiots at the door, instead of trying to defend them -- or pretend they don't exist. They are like the elephant in the living room that so many Croats try to pretend doesn't exist -- especially in public. It's unreasonable for you to expect everyone else to go along with the charade of your denial.

"Can you please explain, why then not a single nation (not even Montenegrins) in former Yugoslavia wanted to live with Serbs together? Something must be wrong there."

Funny you say that, given that there are more minorities from Croatia, from Bosnia, in Serbia, than exist in any one of the other nearby countries -- many Croats & Muslims who want nothing to do with the new Croatia or Islamic Bosnia.

I am third genration American and full-blooded Montenegrin. Milo Djukanovic is a pimp gangster with no manhood, who all should be ashamed to call a Montenegrin. Njegos would spit on his sorry ass, but with the US offering him money and the Russian Mafia just eager to set up their racket there, he manipuated Montenegrin nationalism to get them to split -- to the Montenegrins detriment. Djukanovic sold out all Montenegrins, they just don't know it yet. And that has nothing to do with Croatia or with Croats.

Thanks, the picture shows nothing else but some 50 Croatian immature idiots. I think some were fined, and all of them are ashamed afterward. This idiotic action was condemned by all in Croatia, and I am sure, will not happened again.

What is wrong with your arguments, that you take a stupid behavior by some idiots, and try to taint all Croats. This is losing battle, my friend.

Also. in my humble opinion. you are fighting a losing battle with your "Save Kosovo" campaign.

Please tell me, how can you keep Kosovo, if 95% of the population there, does not want Serbian rule?
