Given their track record so far for predicting Armageddon, I think I will sleep right through this midnight.

There are people who are scientists, and there are people who participate in/work on the effort known as the "Doomsday Clock", but there are no people who are both.

Since this clock is not "running", but is set and reset whenever these scientists feel like it, can anybody explain to me why this is worth any more than a paper bag full of warm spit?

How close did it get under Reagan? I remember it getting pretty close and it got even more attention then. What a bunch of publicity seeking hacks.

1973 was a horrific year for weather, the worst tornado season in US history. One storm alone produced five F5 tornados and nearly completely destroyed the city of Xenia, OH.

I'm surprised they didn't move the clock back at least 1/2 hour due to Nana Pelosi now having the gavel.

most perilous period since Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Nothing perilous about that period. Nothing is more stable than a single nuclear power.

But a bunch of religious zealots with nuclear weapons, who *want* to bring on Armageddon? That's perilous.

matthew 24:

3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?"

4 And Jesus answered and said to them: "Take heed that no one deceives you.

5 For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many.

6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, *pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.

8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

Why change it now? They didn't see fit to change it on 9/11 or the days that followed.

These leftist 'scientists' doomsday clock is simply a measure of the expressed willingness of the United States to defend itself against the the threat of WMDs. If and when Iran announces it has nuclear weapons, I wouldn't expect the clock to be moved one second closer to midnight.

I think they are hoping for that "even a stopped clock is right twice a day" thing.

If Pat Robertson kept the Doomsday Clock he would be mocked relentlessly. Since "scientists" issue these press releases they are reported with respect.

Just guessing here, but probably because 9/11 wasn't a nuclear attack, because North Korea hadn't yet tested a nuclear weapon, and because Iran wasn't obviously thumbing their nose at the world and working on their own nuclear program.
