Security Stepped Up After Terrorist Threat

Excerpt

In Moscow, which was last hit by terrorist attacks in 2004, officials took the unusual step of ordering cell phone service shut off in the subway system. The measure appeared to be an effort to avert the possibility of explosives being detonated by the phones.

Imagine the whining, here in the US, if a security situation forced cell phone traffic to be temporarily suspended.

At least it would be good "heads up" that something was going on.

I can imagine it happening (for good reason) and I can also predict that it would spark an epidemic of aneurysms among the 5% cell phone addicted population.

Maybe a good way to cull the gene pool. ;~))

Actually, this step was taken because of the increasing use of stupid ringtones. I just came out of a meeting that was interrupted in mid-presentation by a loud, tinny rendition of the 'Star Wars' theme.

Never heard of this being done anywhere before.

Seeing as how cellphones are used as detonating devices, I'm not surprised.

In central Moscow the earliest [and the deepest] parts of the subway system are something like 150+ feet below the surface. Towards the city periphery the subway tunnels become shallower, and in many peripheral parts the subway is no longer SUB-, but the trains run on surface, and thus would remain fully vulnerable.

Nothing is easier than to uncover a conspiracy one had organized, manufactured or invented oneself.
