Turkish-Armenian editor shot dead in Istanbul

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - A Turkish-Armenian editor, who had been convicted of insulting Turkey's identity over his comments on Armenians, was shot dead outside his newspaper office in Istanbul on Friday.

Turkish broadcaster NTV said Hrant Dink, a controversial writer and journalist, was shot by an unknown assailant as he left his newspaper Agos around 1300 GMT in central Istanbul.

A colleague of Dink's confirmed he had died. Police released no further information.

Last year Turkey's appeals court upheld a six-month suspended jail sentence against Dink, a Turkish-born Armenian, for referring in an article to an Armenian nationalist idea of ethnic purity without Turkish blood.

The court said the comments went against an article of Turkey's revised penal code which lets prosecutors pursue cases against writers and scholars for "insulting Turkish identity".

Dink was one of dozens of writers who have been charged under laws against insulting Turkishness, particularly over issues related to an alleged genocide of Armenians by Ottoman Turks during World War One.

Turkey denies genocide was committed.

The government has promised to revise the much criticised article of the penal code. The European Union has repeatedly called on Ankara to change the law.

Dink was editor-in-of chief of the bilingual Turkish and Armenian weekly Agos.

...and the Turks brag about their "western openess" and "highly developed civil society". There are few nations so overly narcistic and sensible regarding (dubious) "honour" and "pride" as Turks.

Turkish PM Erdogan calls journalist's killing 'attack on freedom of thought'

"I stress that the attack on Dink is an attack on us all -- on our unity, our integrity, our peace and stability," Erdogan told reporters here after hearing of the assassination in Istanbul during a cabinet meeting.

"This is an attack against freedom of thought and our democratic way of life," he said.

Erdogan said he was sending Justice Minister Cemil Cicek and Interior Minister Abdulkadir Aksu to Istanbul to shed light on what he called a "heinous murder." Dink, the 53-year-old editor of the Armenian-Tuurkish weekly Agos, was shot dead outside the offices of his newspaper on a busy downtown Istanbul street.

When Theo van Gogh was killed in Holland his countryman started to rethink their relations with the Islamists they had welcomed. I wonder if your countrymen will take this opportunity to rethink the wisdom of having radical Islamists in Turkey.

We re-thunk that a long time back, but this likely ain't the work of religionists.

You're correct, I think that he is a Turkish nationalist.

Are you a Christian? Or a moderate Muslim?

No whitewashing of this jihadist murder..no way.

"Muharrem Gozutok, a restaurant owner near the newspaper, said the assailant looked about 20, wore jeans and a cap and shouted "I shot the non-Muslim" as he left the scene."

This little, very important tidbit has been left off many reports since the initial one..seen here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/01/20/wturkey20.xml

Are the bells if Hagis Sophia ringing yet? I thought not.
Even Ghadaffi says not to let the turks into the EU....geesh.

Lets just wait and see. They just busted the killer and he's from the same town where a young kid shot an Italian priest to death a few months ago.

A few hidden cameras in the local mosque might be the key to answering why so many youths from that village are unhinged.
