AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Hours after Gov. Rick Perry kicked off his second full term in office, Ted Nugent helped him celebrate at a black-tie gala, but not all attendees were pleased by the rocker's performance.
Using machine guns as props, Nugent, 58, appeared onstage as the final act of the inaugural ball wearing a cutoff T-shirt emblazoned with the Confederate flag and shouting offensive remarks about non-English speakers, according to people who were in attendance.
Perry's spokesman, Robert Black, downplayed the Tuesday-night incident.
"Ted Nugent is a good friend of the governor's. He asked him if he would play at the inaugural. He didn't put any stipulation of what he would play," Black said.
Others said the appearance was inappropriate.
"I think it was a horrible choice," GOP strategist Royal Masset said. "I hope nobody approved it."
Nugent, a hunting and gun-rights advocate, couldn't be reached for comment Thursday because he was hunting, a spokeswoman said.
The guitarist -- known as the "Motor City Madman" -- lived in Michigan most of his life before moving to Crawford in 2003. He is famed for his 1977 hit "Cat Scratch Fever."
News of Nugent's appearance at the ball drew criticism from civil rights leaders.
"Whenever someone sports the Confederate battle flag, many Texans will be offended, and rightly so, because of what it symbolizes: the enslavement of African-Americans and more recently the symbol of hate groups and terrorists," said Gary Bledsoe, president of the Texas chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Get a life, you whiney bozos.
(Thanks for posting - interesting stuff.)
So what if he wore a t-shirt with a Confederate flag, what B.S. But I guess it's alright to run around with a Black Panther or NAACP t-shirt with nasty remarks about whitey. Equal right's as long as it pertains to minority statements.
I wish those PC police wannabe's would lighten up.
Sounds like fun.
Though I agree he's over the top, I think some people seek out ways to be offended.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
Nugent in Austin, Texas!
Just his being there probably offended most of the population!
Like the one-guy "crowd" CNN quotes in this article?
Ted is his own man- more power to him!
I keep hoping that one of my books will come to Nuge's attention, then we can get down to business . . . and jam. I may be out of practice, but I guarantee I could keep up with him . . . for a while, at least.
BTW, I remember hearing somewhere that Ted Nugent is a FReeper. Does anybody know?
Jeeze they know how Ted Nugent is - why did they hire him to sing then??? You gotta expect a little outlandishness from Ted - that's what he's about!
Funny, they didn't specify a single quote of what Ted Nugent supposedly said that was controversial.
Nuge wasn't quoted in this (CNN) article, so it wouldn't surprise me if his remarks were simply that American citizens (and those who desire that status) should speak English -- perhaps politically incorrect, but certainly not controversial.
Republicans are a bunch of wusses.
Machine guns for props? WOW!!!
Ted Nugent is one of the great constants in our Universe. This was entirely predictable. People could easily be offended if they don't like what Ted Nugent is all about -- in which case, they should have saved their money and stayed away from the gala, leaving their ticket for someone else to enjoy.
What did they expect? WHAM!? Boy George and the Culture Club?
'wish those PC police wannabe's would lighten up.'
They can't because then people would stop being reminded they are supposed to hate. If these bozos can't keep the pot stirred, they have no reason to be. Sad and pathetic but that's what a lawyer does, find conflict and create it where it doesn't exist.
No kidding. They would do well to learn a lesson from Nuge and not be afraid of their own shadows.
What does anyone expect from a situation where advocates from the extreme ends of the racial spectrum take turns in out performing each other?
Is anyone surprised that some GOP "strategist" ( read: professional lie-crafter) is appalled by all this disorder?
Who is the actual target of all this disapproval? The Gov? The Gop? Rednecks? Your President? Your Administration? The Flag? You?
Try to not be dragged into all of this by the "drain circlers" among us.
