Towns tame taxes by keeping children out

New Jersey towns have figured out a way to sidestep the highest property taxes in the U.S. Keep children out. Educating a child in New Jersey costs an average of $12,567 a year, the most in the nation and more than double the property tax parents typically pay. So local governments have hit upon a way to expand the tax base without the expense of higher enrollment: age-restricted housing.

New Jersey developers have responded by building an estimated one-fifth of the country's adults-only housing, making the state the leader in a national trend spurred by baby boomers seeking new homes after their children move out.

John Dewey has been dead for over 50 years.

Morgan compiles data on education that is applicable to here and now.

Dewey was about early 20th century education philosophy. Morgan is about education results in 2007.

Nothing against Dewey but he has nothing to do with evaluating performance in today's schools.

The state is quite beautiful in the western part. That said, I've driven along I-95 on more than one occasion through clouds of noxious fumes so thick I was concerned about the paint on my truck being eaten away.

Much of the new development in Connecticut seems to be age restricted. The end result of course is that family housing becomes much more expensive.

I agree.Boot camp at FT.Dix in January to March was a reason to pass by every chance I got.Riding the trains sure can be an eye opener.

This is my New Jersey. 30,000 parkland acres of near continuous forested rolling hills
and lakes, on the NY border with another 30,000+ acres of state parkland.

These 200,000+ acres alone in North Jersey and adjoining New York State have more visitors yearly
than every national park west of the Mississippi river combined.
If you can afford it, it's a great place to live.

Nope, no kids.

We did without so that my dad (a WWII vet, He was wounded by the Italians and Germans at Salerno, a geophysicist by vocation) could send us to a private school.

Doing without did not exclude our clothes being made from scrap cloth sold at a gas station in a very rural town of 200 people.

Government control of land and minds needs to be abolished.

Sad part is that even too many conservatives don't get it.

They speak of liberty and enjoying their vacation at a national park.

If not for the numbnuts that run the place, New Jersey is a very nice place. Four seasons, farms, cities, Giants, Jets, Devils, Nets, ski in the winter and surf in the summer. If we could get the liberals to go away, I'd go back.

One of the most beautiful cherry blooms in the nation happens in New Jersey ever year. It's in the middle of those scenes in the opening credits of The Sopranos.

They're all over the place. The kids go to schools in neighboring districts or towns. The home town is assessed a tuition based on whatever they base it on and pays it to the district with the school. Saddle River, New Jersey, has no high school. I think it also has no middle school. The public school kids go to Allendale, Ramsey, or Montvale.
