Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said Wednesday that immigration reform is needed more than raids like those that arrested more than 750 people in the Los Angeles metropolitan area over the past week.
Villaraigosa said labor laws should be enforced, borders secured and a pathway to citizenship offered to illegal immigrants who've resided in this country, worked and paid taxes.
"I think that will produce much better results than the raids that occur, that oftentimes two weeks later those people are back," he said while taking audience questions after a speech at the National Press Club.
"I think what we have is a lot of tough talking and not enough results" on immigration, he added.
Legislation to reform immigration laws stalled in Congress last session but President Bush listed the issue as a priority in his State of the Union address on Tuesday, to applause from Democrats and Republicans, and some lawmakers hope to try again.
"I would hope that the Congress standing ovation last night was indicative of a bipartisan commitment to that end, but we'll see," said Villaraigosa.
The raids in a five-county region targeted illegal immigrants who had previously been deported for crimes or defied final deportation orders, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Immigration reform = amnesty
Of course Villaragu is against ICE raids; he lost 750 constituents yesterday!
Raids ARE part of the reform. Reform includes law enforcement. One of the largest reasons we need 'reform' is that the system was not being maintained and the laws were being ignored.
Ought to make convenience store robbery legal too, Antonio.
After all, A guy robs a convenience store, spends the money, a couple weeks later he is back robbing another convenience store.
Legalizing robbery would make enforcement ever so much more efficient, wouldn't it.

AV claims to support "reform", but "reform" includes stepped-up enforcement (or so its advocates claim). Won't AV simply complain about that stepped-up enforcement if "reform" passes? Why should anyone trust that he'd support enforcement after "reform" if he doesn't support it now?
Don't be ridiculous. Of course the Hispanic pressure groups will complain about raids even after "immigration reform" and amnesty are enacted. Why on earth would they do otherwise?
"Raids ARE part of the reform. Reform includes law enforcement."
How do you figure? As soon and Bush pushes through CIR, there will be no need for raids...not because the illegals won't still be working, but because the illegals and their employers will be given amnesty.
Did he say this in English?
"I think that will produce much better results than the raids that occur, that oftentimes two weeks later those people are back,"
He's right about that! It's a waste of taxpayer dollars if the border is still wide open.
amnesty=more Villaraigosa voters.
All the brilliant Generals in our Armies, couldn't have devised a take over of another country as prolific as this without a shot being fired.
The docile surrender of our Country is going to be studied in the text books for decades..
God Help Us.. sw
Probably not.
Dude was protesting a couple of years ago when ICE did a minor roundup in Corona that got 400 illegals. He was in East LA screaming about how illegals were being "persecuted".
I swear he's a media whore--guy never met a camera he didn't like.
this mayor would pick Los Angeles up and take it to Tijuana if he could. This city has been called a sanctuary city which has give permission to dangerous gangs to feel secure here in commiting racist hate crimes against Americans.
Villaraigosa needs to be run out of town on a rail. At least that is what the people would have done when this nation made sense.
Its also important to note that none of the aliens targeted by ICE would NOT be eligible to adjust their status under the proposed amnesty or a guest worker program. Thats the only reason ICE got the go-a-head on the operation in the first place.
Bingo!
He never mentions that his beloved Cuidad El-Lay is a "sanctuary city" for Mexican illegals, but he's counting on it for his big future plans. He envisions himself as a national political figure, probably the future president of Amexica..
I think you've got it. Just make robbery, rape and murder legal and you can cut the crime rate. Simple, easy -- disgusting. Some politicians will do anything to gather more votes!
After CIR is passed and 12 million illegal aliens are given citizenship, this will bring in a new wave of 40 million new illegal aliens. We will need raids on them until a new CIR is passed 15 years from now and gives them citizenship. We have seen this story before.
Unfortunately, you are correct. The raids will end, English will end, borders will end.
